I’ve been having a blast this week on my show, playing back some of my favorite interviews with my musical idols from my radio days in Los Angeles.  I’m really considering doing this on a continuing basis on Friday mornings, as I still have so many of them to share… Let me know your thoughts on that.

I have to thank listener/friend Drew, who sent me a lot of these audio files, as I didn’t have access to many of them.

Today, we’ll finish the week (no, I won’t be doing a show tomorrow), with some treasures….

The very first interview in the KSCA “Music Hall” was with Talking Heads leader David Byrne on July 6, 1994.  The station had signed on the air just days before.  It was also my very first interview and, yes, I was nervous!  This picture was taken a few years later at a radio conference in Boulder Colorado.

Sheryl Crow’s career hadn’t yet taken off, but we were certainly instrumental in her success.  “All I Wanna Do” was the song that the station signed on the air with.  I had known Sheryl before her first album came out; she was dating my friend, musician Kevin Gilbert, who brought her in to his Tuesday night gathering of musicians, where all the songs for the album that became known as “Tuesday Night Music Club” were written and recorded. (I’ve known Sheryl the longest of all of these, but can’t find a picture with her. Hmm.)

I loved discovering new bands, and one of my best discoveries was a band out of Chapel Hill, NC called Ben Folds Five.  This was their very first radio interview… I’m not sure of the date, but it might have been October 16, 1995.  I’m still trying to verify that.

And finally, for a while I hosted mornings at KSCA with my former KLOS colleague, Chuck Moshontz.  We did a series of remote broadcasts from Starbucks locations around the LA area.  I’m still hoping to get the recordings from some of them, including one with John Hiatt!  But my friend Drew really came through with this one.  It was February 9, 1996. Broadcasting live from Starbucks in Encino with Dar Williams and Joan Baez.  As you’ll see from the pictures, it was jam packed with an overflow crowd.  You’ll want to listen for the singalong near the end of the segment.

This afternoon, I’m back in for one final show guest hosting for Randi Rhodes…  Talk to you in a bit!
