History is being made today in Wisconsin. Whether or not the Democrats are successful in recalling enough Republicans to take back control of the Wisconsin state Senate, the fact that today’s votes are happening is a moment that we should all cherish.
It’s people power. And the government here in the US is supposed to be of, for and by the people. It’s Democracy in action!
Even though the corporate media isn’t reporting on it, more than 45,000 Verizon workers are on strike!
I believe we are at a seminal moment for our generation. We can either embrace the spirit of the ’60’s and stand up for our rights, or allow the corporations to take over and become a fascist oligarchy.
I choose the former.
Today on the show, I’ll speak with Norwood Orrick, a Verizon telephone worker and member of IBEW 824 in Tampa. Although his local is not on strike, he’s written about the strike for Daily Kos... and also editor of Labor News for Progressive Congress News.
Stephanie Taylor– co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee – is on the ground in Wisconsin, and she’ll check in with us to talk about what’s happening there this morning.
And it’s Tuesday… that means a visit from GottaLaff of The Political Carnival. We’ll talk about these stories and more:
VIDEO- BLUNT: How Crazy Is the Tea Party Congress?
Meet the Press VIDEO- GOP strategist Alex Castellanos: People think Rick Perry is “Sarah Palin with a skirt.”
VIDEO: Apparently Allen West didn’t read the S & P release
Video- Tea Partiers Cheer the Downgrade of America’s Credit Rating
Michele Bachmann: Improving economy “won’t take that long”
VIDEO ADDED: “Fox anchors admit going soft on Palin.” Not the word I’d use…

to see what I couldn’t post as a comment to the blog entry here. I suspect Verizon, as my dsl provider, blocked it and couldn’t block php comment boards.
Some older articles about telecom union organizing that give a historic perspective on last 12 years of unions that shows why the EFCA Pres. Obama stopped pursuing is needed.

My comment:
The struggles to get, and Verizon delays in, implementing a neutrality agreement that allows card check organizing in 2000 led to 2008 pushes for EFCA Employee Free Choice Act or ‘card check’ as a national law, amending 1947 Taft-Hartley Act. The Center for Union ‘Facts’ (Rick Berman’s Berman and Associates corporate nonprofit front group, Rachel Maddow interviewed him Oct 2009 after covering his ‘rottenacorn.com’ smear site. Maddow findings corroborated on bermanexposed.com).

Verizon’s current demand for no disability benefits for workers, leading to Aug 8, 2011 strike is part of a longer term intent to put workers into state worker’s comp systems that ALEC legislators cut funding to, raise hassles in application process etc., to save Verizon money on that end too -lower business payments for worker’s comp as a ‘good state business climate.’ Gov/criminal Rick the crook Scott may have cut the FL worker’s comp budget already.

My comment:
ATT bought SBC and took over Cingular Wireless union cell phone business. I don’t know if the CBA (union contract) carried over in the buyout.
