Unfortunately, the news isn’t about the end of the oil geyser in the gulf, the end of the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan, the prosecution of Bush or Cheney, or any of the huge number of other issues I’d like to see rectified. But then again, right now, any good news is good, and this news is, indeed, very good.
For the past few weeks, I’ve shared with you the saga of Danny Tate, a very talented songwriter and artist whose life was taken away from him. Danny admittedly had some issues with substance abuse but, while working to shed himself of the demons, his brother -by way of a conservatorship- stripped Danny of the right to handle his own affairs, let his insurance lapse and used Danny’s own money to mount a legal fight against him.
Danny had his day in court today, and he and Kevin Montgomery -who helped bring the matter to the public’s attention- will stop by at the beginning of the show to tell us what happened!
Now, on to the matter of war. My friend (and my favorite activist) David Swanson today announced a new Coalition Against War Spending. Now up to 50, they’re Congressional candidates who are calling for an end to the funding of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their message simply reads:
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost Americans over $1 trillion in direct costs, and over $3 trillion altogether.
At a time when our national debt exceeds $13 trillion, we can no longer afford these wars.
It’s time for Congress to reject any funding except to bring all our troops safely home.
David will be on the show tonight to talk about the coalition, and how you can get involved too at WarIsACrime.org .
Karoli, who’s been blogging lately at Crooks & Liars spent last Friday watching the Texas School Board hearings about the changes they want to make to textbooks, and she’ll fill us in on all the sordid, scary details. And Nicole Belle, also from C&L joins us for our regular Monday session looking back at the Sunday talking head shows…
Tomorrow night, I’ll be joined by candidate Jonathan Tasini, running for Congress from NY against incumbent Charlie Rangel, and The Hill columnist Brent Budowsky!
