While a move towards open conflict today may seem extremely remote in our country, we must never forget that it is the ultimate consequence of the contradictions that we see expressed every day. The class interests as expressed in everything from tug of war on collective negotiations on wages, the restriction of ability to collectively sue a corporation for violations of contracts, laws eroding the ability to ensure fair opportunities to employment for disadvantaged groups, and the gradual moves in states towards reducing the ability to take any form of collective actions for the sake of common outcomes, can in a tougher position lead the fight in the streets – and then the military will also be there.

Class struggle is ongoing; it is only differently labeled and takes more or less brutal forms in different times and in different parts of the world. The Swedish “model”, which has been deemed to have successfully managed to merge social democracy with capitalist economy since the 30s, is today no more than a tired joke. Meanwhile, there has been a rapid increase in the share of workers in precarious employment, of those forced into meaningless labor market measures, and individuals under-bidding each other in fear of being “disciplined’ for upholding even their minimum rights in an environment where the employer makes the rules.

At the moment the middle class will be kept happy with tax cuts and distractions to take their attention of the fate of their fellow man, but middle class people are also the most prone to slip from their relatively privileged. Historically, it is then, when the middle class and working class interests coincide, as a real possibility of genuine social upheaval and change can unfold.

People died in the streets this winter and spring, in Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, Yemen and Syria, in basically the same struggles as us. In other circumstances it would have been us who we had to come face to face with military vehicles and tanks, just as the Swedish workers did in 1931, as East German workers did in 1953, as in Northern Ireland in 1972, Iran in 1979 or the West Bank in 2000 to name just a few examples.

We feel with the victims of the Syrian security forces’ bullets, but the ongoing riots in the Middle East and North Africa also show that it there is still a time at which people are willing to set aside fears and compliance to take to the streets for common goals – even when they face down near certain attacks by their own military. They show that another world maybe, just maybe, is possible.

Nicole, after listening to your show for over a year, I’d been thinking about donating (even though I’m out of work right now), but this really got me to do it (just finished a few minutes ago). I wish I had your courage and dedication.

Every so often some part of my brain gets bored and I realize that an interesting anagram can be formed from someone’s name. I don’t know what your Congresscritter’s rank was in the military, but I rearranged the letters in “Allen West” (and added appropriate periods) to form: “Lt. N. Weasel.” (N for “No-Guts” maybe? &^) I hope you get a chuckle out of this as I did.

You go, Nicole! Sorry you had to go through the ordeal. West is a bully and a thug, I hope this wakes up some of the sheep that decided not to vote and allowed this predator to become a Congressional Representative. West should truly be in jail (just google Allen West), not in Congress.

Glenn Beck has been trying to recruit Allen West to run for president for the last month. And over the last few weeks, he’s salivated every time a sound bite featuring West surfaces. So Beck’s interview with West on radio today could probably be best described as a love fest. In fact, Beck even had some Barry White playing in the background. Really.

While the interview was lighthearted (see above reference to Barry White), Beck did cover some serious positions such as West’s view of the Fed. But that’s really not what many wanted to hear. What everyone was looking for is whether or not West is going to run for president in 2012. The answer? “Not now.”

But “not now” wasn’t an answer Beck was willing to take, and instead edited West‘s response to include the answer he’d been wishing for.
