Loretta Lynch Confirmed: AG
• The Senate voted 56-43 on Thursday to confirm veteran NY prosecutor Loretta Lynch as the next attorney general, five months after President Obama submitted her nomination to Congress. Her vote became mired in an anti-trafficking bill, which passed Wednesday. Sen Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke against Lynch on the floor Thursday but didn’t vote (WaPo)
House Republicans Back Obama on Trade
• The House Ways and Means Committee Thursday approved a trade promotion (TPA) measure – 25-13 – with only two Democrats lending their support to the divisive bill. Reps Ron Kind (WI) and Earl Blumenauer (OR) backed the measure. The House Finance Committee has already backed its version, setting up floor votes next month (Hill)
New Offensive Cyberweapon Strategy
• SecDef Ashton Carter Thursday released a new strategy that for the first time explicitly discusses the circumstances under which cyberweapons could be used against an attacker, and naming the countries it says present the greatest threat: China, Russia, Iran and North Korea (NYT)
