Today is a National Day of Mourning. Sadly, that works on so many levels.
Today President Jimmy Carter’s official funeral was held. The last truly decent man to be president is gone. Perhaps some of his goodness will now enter the souls of those who have or seek power. But I’m not holding my breath.
The mourning is not only for Jimmy Carter – it’s for our democracy, the future of the nation (and the world), and my former home of Los Angeles where so many friends and former neighbors have lost everything.
Yes, we’re in mourning.
Today is Thursday, when we get together with Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC. It’s been a while since we’ve done this as I was challenge with some health issues that kept me off the air, and then the holidays. But we’re back together today.
And we’re joined by NJ State Senator Andrew Zwicker who was supposed to be with us last month.
Better late than never! He’ll tell us about the law he got passed in NJ, The Freedom to Read Act. Andrew wrote a guest post for Down with Tyranny about it last month. Read it for yourself here.
I mentioned on the show today that I had shot a video of a Day in My Life as a gift to my father back in 1992. He suffered an accident – was pushed by an employee which resulted in a spinal cord injury and left him quadriplegic for the rest of his life. I would fly home to South Florida regularly to visit him. In this case, it was his birthday, and I made the video to show him what my life was back as a birthday gift.
At the time, I lived just off of Pacific Coast Highway at 133 West Channel Road. It was at Santa Monica Canyon, right below Pacific Palisades. I shot a bunch of footage at that apartment and on the beach across the street. I’ll embed it below for anyone who’s interested and would like to see part of the area that burned over the past few days from 32 years ago… There’s also a lot of behind the scenes footage from KLOS, where I worked as producer of the Mark & Brian Show, including a star-studded trip for a live broadcast from Las Vegas. Ahh, memories. (The neighborhood visit begins at the 7:50 mark.)
