Both Alex and I had technical problems last week when he joined us, so he’s back today as the regime’s attack on Social Security intensifies.
The news has only gotten more alarming and unprecedented in the last seven days. Alex Lawson is executive director of Social Security Works, an organization dedicated to fighting to protect and expand Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; lower drug prices; ensure economic justice for all; and guarantee health care as a human right—because everyone deserves to live in dignity.
I’ve known Alex for close to 15 years, and have never heard him sound as worried about what’s being done to Social Security as he does now. But he always brings some optimism, along with great advice. He encourages us to all go to myssa.gov to download our social security statements so that we have a hard copy for it and when the site goes down or our information disappears. Another site he recommends is HandsOffSocialSecurity.org to get involved or to organize your own action.
One more thing he suggests is to make contact with the constituents services people at both your your senators and your representative’s offices. Get their names and contact information so that you already know who you’ll need to speak with if and when something happens to disrupt your benefits. It helps to be prepared.
I was out yesterday dealing with some health issues, both physical and mental. I’m always honest with my listeners about what I’m going through, and I’m really not doing well right now. I know I’m not alone. I just want to let you know that I’ll have to miss some shows coming up to deal with doctors appointments and to take care of myself. But I’ll be here as much and as often as I can.
Thanks for bearing with me.
