Man sentenced for raping women he met on ChristianMingle, Match.com

Good lord, God may not be so perfect after all. So much for putting one's faith into an imaginary invisible white man living in the sky who can't even perfect his matchmaking skills, let alone preserve thee from all evil. Via the Los Angeles Times: A Del Mar man was sentenced Friday to 37 years to life in prison for raping two women he met on the dating sites ChristianMingle.com and Match.com. The All Powerful couldn't even manage to ordain that this vile monster show even a little remorse for his sins. Instead, the rapist said that he "was willing to drop [...]

The Real Scandal

Last night at my daughter's softball game, I was chatting with one of the other moms about our daughters entering high school in the fall.  The other mom told me that her daughter was joining ROTC because she's always wanted to go into the military.  I smiled gently and just said "I hope that we're not fighting any wars by the time she graduates."  But hidden behind my tentative smile was the sadness in knowing that if this young woman does join the military, she has a greater than 1 in 4 chance of being raped while serving her country. [...]

Rape is Rape – in Cleveland or in the Military!

Yes, we had some technical difficulties on the show today, but I seem to have the problems fixed, finally.  We'll be back Monday with phones in working order. In the meantime, it was a good thing I had lots to talk about, as we weren't able to get any of our guests on the line. But we did talk a bit about the horrific revelations coming out of Cleveland's house of horrors - and the horrific reality of sexual assault in the US Military. Wired has the details on the Air Force Chief of Sexual-Assault Prevention's arrest on sexual battery [...]

The Hard Way

The mystery surrounding Michelle Shocked's shocking comments from the concert stage at Yoshi's in San Francisco Sunday night continues as conflicting accounts of what actually happened surfaced, but no clear statement from the singer-songwriter herself.  Those comments will come tomorrow morning here, live on my show. Music journalist Chris Willman at Yahoo music followed up on his original story with one that includes an alternate take on what happened.   The follow-up, "Michelle Shocked: 'Hatemonger' or Misunderstood Provocateur"  sounds more like what my personal knowledge of Shocked (through her music and my interviews with her over the years) leads me [...]

Rape, Rapists and Republicans

Today on the show we talked about the verdict in the Steubenville rape trial and about the insanity at CPAC.  And just moments after the show ended, a tweet crossed my stream from Mother Jones about this CPAC joke about Ashley Judd and rape.  Timing is everything, huh? CPAC: Where Ashley Judd Rape Jokes Happen bit.ly/15hDXEG — Mother Jones (@MotherJones) March 18, 2013   Although I took issue with Crooks & Liars proclaiming that Candy Crowley was "oozing sympathy" for the racists, the truth is that the media in general seemed to be more concerned about the rapists than they [...]

Anyone Else Missing an Hour? Schools? Media Responsibility?

Damn Daylight Savings Time.  Don't get me wrong. I like the fact that it stays light out later; I just hate losing an hour of valuable sleep time this time every year.  We should really pick a time and stick with it.  Unbelievably, Arizona does something right! Anyway, barring my tired status this morning, it was a busy show. I filled listeners in on our Saturday evening in the emergency room.  Alison had a softball injury that turned out to be a sprained index finger.  I erred on the side of caution, and will likely get  some interesting programming out [...]
