Political Hypocrisy and Other 21st Century Realities

Welcome to the 21st century political reality. Hypocrisy all around. President Obama proved that he can release Gitmo detainees without the approval of Congress after six years of hiding behind their intransigence on the subject. John McCain, who is hailed as a hero only because he was a Prisoner of War in Vietnam (certainly not due to his heroics in war or the way he was captured), originally was all for the prisoner swap to get Berghdahl's release -- that is, until Obama did it. As for all of Bergdahl's former platoon-mates (if that's what you call his fellow soliders) [...]

Special Select Friday Show

I haven't been doing any shows on Fridays for the past few years. But obviously, things are rapidly changing in the progressive talk radio field. Randi Rhodes' show ended last Friday, and today, Ed Schultz will end his radio show. Over the past few months, the downloads, views and listens to the podcast, live show and video archives have been steadily growing. I decided a while ago that if you come, I'll build it! So today, I decided to test the waters with a few interviews I'd already recorded but hadn't yet had the time to play on this [...]

Protect Your Radio

Just shy of a week after Randi Rhodes said goodbye to her radio show, Ed Schultz announced he's ending his radio program too. I have no idea what the circumstances are surrounding this decision, but I am disappointed that he gave no notice, leaving stations to scramble, and that he didn't do this before Randi left the air, as there's the possibility, with time opening up on some stations, that her should could have survived. Either way, that's water under the bridge now...  I understand that Thom Hartmann will now move his show back to the noon-3pm ET time slot, [...]

Moving Onward

Randi Rhodes broadcast her final program on Friday. I'm hoping she'll come back - but, for now, she's done. I was honored to be in the studio on her last day. Not that I was invited, mind you. I just showed up. As I told her, I just couldn't imagine sitting at home listening. So, I got her a balloon and a card and a bottle of champagne... and it was the definition of bittersweet. But move forward we must... so, on the show today, we looked to the future. Congressman Alan Grayson was on with me in the first [...]

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Let’s Make Sure It’s Streamed!

In his masterpiece, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,"  Gil Scott-Heron offers an unbridled indictment of the failure of the corporate media, which has only gotten exponentially worse in the four decades since we first heard it. An updated version would certainly include some reference to today's predicament. Senator Al Franken calls the fight for Net Neutrality "the free speech issue of our time" . Presidential candidate Barack Obama promised that he'd always support and would only appoint FCC commissioners who'd uphold his belief in the need for a free and open internet. So, WTF is going on with Chairman Tom [...]

How To Do Your Homework & Double Check The News

Guest post by Shawn "Smith" Peirce If you ever wanted to know how Randi Rhodes - and other great broadcasters - do their homework? Here's the lesson you've been waiting for. With the end of 'The Randi Rhodes Show', many of Randi's listeners have been expressing deep concern about where they're going to find an information resource quite as effective as her legendary homework page. Thankfully, Randi's staff decided to take on that challenge recently, so her Assistant Producer, Shawn "Smith" Peirce joined guest host Nicole Sandler for a seven step walk-through on how Randi's listeners, Nicole's listeners, or really [...]

The Vagina Dialogues (5/1/2014)

If you put three women together on a radio show with no rules and no limitations other than to talk like real women do, what would you call it? I actually liked Laffy's suggestion of The Vagina Dialogues, but Amy Simon didn't. But the three of us, GottaLaff of The Political Carnival, Amy Simon of She's History, and I spent most of the second hour of the show simply shooting the shit about life. We'll try it again, though I don't know what it'll be called. And we'll invite other women into the mix too. The idea to do something [...]

Radio’s Goddess Retiring

As you likely know by now, The Randi Rhodes Show is ending in a few weeks. I'm guest hosting for her for one final week - beginning today. Then she'll return Monday to finish off her last two weeks. I sent the following out to my email list this morning. (Scroll down for the form to subscribe to our emails). Radio's Goddess Retiring Sorry it's been so long since my last email update. I try not to send too many of these, but if ever there was a time to check in, it's now. The Randi Rhodes Show is ending on May [...]

Saving the Planet – And Ourselves (04/22/2014)

It's Earth Day, and the prognosis for our planet isn't great. We've passed 400 parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere, high above the 350 ppm from which 350.org took its name - signifying the maximum levels we can sustain if life is to survive on earth. As Dr. James Hanson,  former head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. and one of the most respected climatologists in the world, said of our situation: “If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that [...]

Radio is a sound salvationRadio is cleaning up the nationThey say you better listen to the voice of reasonBut they don't give you any choice'cause they think that it's treason. So you had better do as you are told. You better listen to the radio.I wanna bite the hand that feeds me.I wanna bite that hand so badly.I want to make them wish they'd never seen me.Some of my friends sit around every eveningand they worry about the times aheadBut everybody else is overwhelmed by indifferenceand the promise of an early bedYou either shut up or get cut up;they don't wanna hear [...]
