It’s Springtime in America

The Occupy Wall Street movement began in the fall. But with spring blossoming yesterday, it seems certain that the uprising will bloom in bigger ways. Alison Kilkenny is a NYC based reporter, covering the movement for In These Times and The Nation, as well as Citizen Radio, which she co-hosts with her brilliantly funny husband, Jamie Kilstein.  She joins us in the first hour today to bring us up to date on #OWS at six months. It's still March - which means it's Women's History Month.  Time for a visit from my dear friend Amy Simon, cultural HERstorian and writer& [...]

A Palestinan & a Jew Do a Radio Show

I think if the world would let us do it, Maysoon Zayid and I could fix our problems.  She joined me today on the show to have some fun, and vent! Follow her on twitter, and tell her to start doing a show Friday mornings here at  Radio or Not! We started the show with a call to activist Austin Guest - a veteran of Occupy Wall Street - who was featured in this video, and is one of the organizers of today's #M15 F the Banks action: We then turned to a topic discussed quite a bit here, [...]

Modern Monetary Theory-and the Whittling Away of the 4th Amendment

I might be in a bit over my head today... Listener Stefanitza suggested I speak with an expert on Modern Monetary Theory.  Interestingly enough, that request came shortly after a discussion on the topic on a listserv I'm on, prompted by this piece in the Washington Post. The more I read about Warren Mosler - economist, president and founder of Mosler Automotive, and co-founder of the Center for Full Employment And Price Stability at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He briefly ran for President of the United States as a member of the Democratic Party in the 2012 election before [...]

End Prohibition!

I've long believed that the so-called War on Drugs does much more harm than good. The good folks at Drug Policy Central have come up with a War on Drugs Clock. The amounts reset on January 1 of each year.  The numbers below are are cumulative from the first of the year only! //   Arrests for drug law violations this year are expected to exceed the 1,663,582 arrests of 2009. Law enforcement made more arrests for drug abuse violations (an estimated 1.6 million arrests, or 13.0 percent of the total number of arrests) than for any other offense in [...]

On Indefinite Detention and Fighting for What’s Right

I've been vilified on the internet for daring to attempt to reason with people who won't criticize our president, even in light of horrible abuses of our constitutional rights as citizens. I've learned my lesson: tweeting while sick and attempting to reason with the unreasonable are two things I will no longer do. When my thoughts are muddled, I'll stay off the twitter machine.  And I'll no longer engage those who don't debate in good faith. That said, I have many reasons to be worried about the provisions in the Defense Authorization Act the allow for the indefinite detention of [...]

I’m in for Randi Rhodes Again Today & Tomorrow

Big thanks to Shane-O, host of Funked in the Head for guest hosting my show last week while I was in DC, and for the first few days of this week while I guest host the Randi Rhodes Show. Yesterday, I was joined by Peter Nagy of NY Communities for Change, who filled us in on last week's Dec 6  and ongoing action Occupy Our Homes! Greg Palast checked in to once again make our heads spin while talking about the crazy stories he tells in his new book, Vultures Picnic! I also filled you in on my trip to [...]

No Slow News Day – Barney Says Good-Bye

The morning began with the news that my favorite congressional curmudgeon is retiring.  Barney Frank has announced he will not seek re-election next year.  Such sad news, as the House of Representatives is surely a finer place with Barney's no bullshit approach to his job. I only had the opportunity to interview him once.  It was June of 2009, and I was hosting a late night show on Air America.  Since I was on so late, I would record some of the interviews earlier in the day.  That was the case with Congressman Frank.  But I don't think he knew [...]

Nov 17- Global Day of Action – Occupy the World

Today's show began with a simulcast of the ustream live video via TheOther99  from Wall Street.  As I noted Monday morning, Mayor Bloomberg's fascist tactics of having the NYPD raid the OWS encampment at Zuccotti Park in the dead of night would make the protesters even more determined.  As the sign says, "Screw us and we multiply". That was evident this morning for tens of thousands who were watching the live streams - and in this photo tweeted by Michael Moore (@MMFlint) On today's show, I spoke with Greg Basta of NYCC about the activities planned in NYC today.  From [...]

Today’s Show – Matt Taibbi on #OWS

Tomorrow marks two months since the Occupy movement officially began in Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan.  Since then, the occupations have spread to all 50 states and upwards of 80 counties around the globe.   Although some tactics may have to change in the wake of the NYPD's brutal eviction and demolition of the original occupation, the toothpaste can't be put back into the tube! I've been a fan of Matt Taibbi's since I began paying attention to serious reporting.  I first interviewed him back on Air America in March of 2009, when he was putting the truly [...]
