The Day Before Election Day

I took that picture of a little boy yesterday at the Obama rally in Hollywood FL.  My 13 year old daughter only accompanied me because it was my birthday, and I hope that someday she'll look back on it and remember that she saw our first African American President in person. I also hope that, in his second term, President Obama will become a truly great leader. Today is election day and, as soon as this post is up, I'll be taking my absentee ballot in to the Broward County Supervisor of Elections office in person, and will wait until they verify [...]

It’s A Mad World

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120913_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Mad_World.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window On days like this, I feel like crawling under the blankets and never coming out.  Although I regularly rail against idiocy and lies and question the opposite world  in which the obstructionists of progress reside, I'm at a loss to explain the insanity of religious zealots. So some idiot makes a low-budget, truly awful movie and posts it online. Go after that guy if you must, but to engage in riots and violence aimed at a country that had nothing to do with the production of said sorry piece [...]

On Fairness

I don't have much time to write this today, as I have to take my kid to a doctors appointment shortly... But I did want to give links from today's show, and write a few words about fairness, which was the overarching theme of today's show. My friend Cliff Schecter summed up some of it beautifully for Politico: Only in America. We have a system where each candidate for high office only has to befriend there very own pet oligarch - be it Adelson, Foster Freiss, etc. - and they can run for office forever, as their friendly billionaire gives [...]

Solomon, Palast & Belle

No, Solomon, Palast & Belle isn't a law firm ... quite the opposite.  These three are people who do a lot of good - and happened to all be guests on my show this morning! We began with Norman Solomon, long time activist turned congressional candidate.  I always love talking with Norman, but wanted him on the show this morning so I could talk listeners into donating a few bucks to his campaign.  Extra impetus - your donation to Solomon's campaign (or to Dr. David Gill's) AT THIS LINK enters you into a drawing to win a Fender Stratocaster autographed [...]

GOP, Hypocrisy is Thy Name

Rick "Frothy" Santorum - you fucking hypocrite.  You say President Obama is "snob" because he wants every young person to have access to at least one year of higher education.  You, frothty, who hold an an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and a law degree degree from the Dickinson School of Law. And, of course, your undergraduate degree from Penn State.  While we've all been wondering what happened to you to make you such a hateful, spiteful, vindictive piece of shit, I think that Penn State might have something to do with it. Did you perhaps spend some time [...]

Thursday Nov 10 – Today’s Show

It was a busy day!  The first hour included a visit from investigative journalist Greg Palast, giving us the juicy details behind his new book Vultures' Picnic: In Pursuit of Petroleum Pigs, Power Pirates, and High-Finance Carnivores. I finally got the time to start reading it just a couple of days ago, and it reads like a spy novel... but it's all true. I'll let you know when I'm done, but  is definitely worth the read, whether the printed version or the Kindle edition with audio & video.  By the way, if you read the printed version and want to see [...]

On Oil Spills, Warfare, Websites and Wingnuts

I try to end each week with a break from the very serious subjects that often consume my shows and posts.  John Fugelsang joins me on Thursday mornings to help us laugh about some of the craziness we have to face each and every day. Today we didn't have a lot of laughs.  War hit very close to home this week.  Yesterday, we learned that photojournalist Tim Hetherington was killed while covering the war in Libya.  And yes, it is a war. I only met Tim once, and it was via phone.  I had the pleasure of interviewing him last [...]

This Is What Disaster Looks Like

It's tragic. My heart goes out to the people of Japan who should be dealing with the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters of all time - a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by a powerful tsunami that wiped out entire towns.  But instead of beginning the process of grieving and rebuilding, the Japanese are now bracing for an even bigger disaster - this one entirely avoidable. The man-made nuclear power plants are just no match for mother nature. Last night, the Japanese Prime Minister delivered a very uncharacteristic speech in which he cautioned that "dangerous levels of radioactivity [...]
