Presidential Balls

Perhaps it's the fact that today is the last day in April that got me a bit feisty today, or it was the fact that John Fugelsang and GottaLaff were my guests this morning, or that the president's press conference was so easy to heckle - or a combination of all of the above. I guess my potty-mouthed mocking this morning began with the reading of the now-infamous sorority sister's profanity-filled missive, and then listening to this spoof of it. But when President Obama responded to a question during the press conference about the Guantanamo detainees on hunger strikes, I [...]

On Death and Politics

Aaron Swartz Adnan Latif (Photo: Wikipedia) Today's show highlighted some sad realities. I talked about two deaths in which the US government was undoubtedly complicit. Aaron Swartz, a brilliant young man who was being targeted by the DoJ for something many (including me) contend was not a crime, was facing decades in prison and battling lifelong depression, committed suicide. I didn't know Aaron and, although I knew of his work, did not know his name until I learned of his death.  But I watch as Chris Hayes yesterday paid tribute to his friend and former classmate... What Is In the NDAA That You Should Worry About!

I've spent the last two days digging deep into this story.  Yesterday on the Randi Rhodes Show, I interviewed Congressman Raul Grijalva and Congressman Keith Ellison, both of whom expressed concern over the provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act that allow for indefinite detention of anyone suspected of being a terrorist .. or even a terrorist sympathizer.  That applies to both citizens and non-citizens. I also spoke with Politico's Josh Gerstein who had posted "On National Defense Authorization Act, Obama Pulls Veto Threat" while the show was in progress. On the House floor Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers disputed the impact [...]

On HR3, Osama bin Laden, and Allen West’s Very Small Penis

Quite a show today... David Dayen, who always does a great job covering the news for FireDogLake, joined me near the top of the show to give the details on yesterday's passage of HR3 - the anti-choice bill - by the House of Representatives.  Sixteen so-called Democrats joined with all the Republicans to limit women's rights to control our own bodies. Where are the jobs, Mr. Boehner? Jason Leopold, deputy managing editor of Truthout.org, has done extensive investigative reporting on Guantanamo Bay, including exclusive interviews with former guards and detainees.  He joined the show this morning to cut through the [...]

Monday, Monday – part one

It's a double shot Monday... Midway through this morning's show, I got an email from Randi Rhodes' producer asking if I'd be able to fill in for her today.  So now, at 7:30 pm, I'm finally sitting down to write today's post. Needless to say, it was a busy day!  Here's part one: Late yesterday, we were treated to more of our nation's unflattering secrets, courtesy of WikiLeaks.  This time, the leaks deal with one of our least attractive features - Guantanamo Bay.  To fill us in on what he was able to glean from the files as of this [...]

Privatize This!

"It's not a budget. This is a cause."  A direct quote from Republican Paul Ryan, the Eddie Munster lookalike who heads up the House Budget Committee on his budget... er... cause. The thing that everyone needs to be screaming/blogging/talking about is the fact that Ryan's budget cause would do to Medicare what George W. Bush wanted to do to Social Security - kill it!  W failed in that quest.  Thank goodness.  Because if he had been successful in privatizing Social Security, he would have killed it - along with millions of seniors who would have lost everything when the banksters [...]
