Fight for 15 and Other Fabulous ‘F’ Words

FAST FOOD FORWARD FIGHT FOR FIFTEEN It began with Fast Food Forward - NYC area fast food workers walking off the job, demanding a living wage.  It spread to Chicago, where workers decided to Fight For 15 , once again using those alliterative 'F' words to focus on funding families. In the wake of McDonald's insulting sample monthly budget  (check out page 4), the protests have continued spreading - St. Louis, Milwaukee and Detroit have seen similar strikes in recent weeks.  And this week, over the next four days, fast food workers in Flint, MI and Kansas City, MO join in [...]

The Scariest Halloween Ever

It's Halloween, so I thought I'd assemble some really scary things for you to think about today (and leading up to election day on Tuesday). 1. In the wake of Sandy, let's remember Mitt Romney's big laugh line during his RNC speech: "President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans...and to heal the planet...." He went on to say that it's immoral for the United States to take out loans to help fellow Americans. Really? I'd say it's immoral not to do anything and everything possible to help those in need, especially after a disaster [...]

On Sensata, Malala and the Fools on the Hill

If you've noticed that #Sensata is trending on Twitter today, it's certainly not because the media is all over it. The mainstream, corporate media, that is.  Shows and alternative media (like mine) are talking about the Bain-run company that's moving its Freeport, IL factory to China and forcing its soon-to-be-former employees to train their replacements. My friend Dave Johnson has written about it extensively at the Campaign for America's Future, but here's an excerpt: If you are hearing about a company named Sensata, here is the story. Right now this company is moving equipment out of a factory in [...]

Double Header Today – I’m in for Thom Hartmann this Afternoon

I'll be filling in for Thom Hartmann for the rest of the week, so it's a busy one... On my show this  morning, I'll chat with Media Trainer Joel Silberman about last week's presidential debate and tomorrow night's VP debate. We'll find out what what went wrong on Wednesday night, and get some advice for Joe Biden.  Amy Simon of She's History will weigh in with some fabulous female facts. And John Amato of Crooks & Liars will weigh in on the election and how the media is now fixated on Twitter! Check in later for info about topics on [...]

Welcome To A Brand New Year

This morning we began yet another new year of shows in which we examine what's happening and try to figure it all out. Today, I was joined by Howie Klein of Down With Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.  We talked about his trip to the Yucutan and his visits with the Mayan people who told him that it's only the calendar that ends in December, not the world! We also discussed the DCCC, the NDAA  (and my questions to Debbie Wasserman Schultz about it on the Randi Rhodes Show on Friday), and the upcoming elections and the need to [...]

Today’s Show- Mon Nov 14 – Occupy Oakland Raided Again

For an hour or so prior to the start of this morning's show, I was simulcasting the live video stream from Spencer (@OakFoSho) as the Oakland PD and law enforcement from surrounding cities once again raided the Occupy Oakland encampment at Oscar Grant Park. My friend Joshua Holland (senior writer and editor at AlterNet) lives in San Francisco and was once again on the scene as the raid happened.  He joined me by phone at the end of the first hour to discuss what went on during the pre-dawn hours this morning, and wrote about it: "Thousands of [...]

Something’s Got To Give

I finished the show this morning with a brief mention that my mom died 32 years ago today.  She had leukemia, but that's not what killed her. The chemo destroyed so much of her insides that the doctor wanted to give her a colostomy bag.  My mom didn't confide in me about her medical issues (her flawed reasoning was that she didn't want us to worry), so all these years later, I still struggle with the facts.  But she did tell me that she refused the surgery. She wouldn't get the bag because she didn't want to be [...]

Monday Morning – The Nicole Sandler Show

It's Monday, so that means we get to re-live some of the high and low points from yesterday's Talking Head shows with Crooks & Liars' Nicole Belle.  It's a weekly segment we call "Fools on the Hill."  Here's what we'll hit on today, with links to all the clips, and Nicole's descriptions of them: We’re six weeks away from the midterm elections and the media is in full swing determining the narratives that are going to take us through the elections.  It appears that the media wants us to be wildly dissatisfied with Obama and associate his policies with that [...]
