Plutonium is Forever

Three years ago today, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, and triggered a massive tsunami that claimed among its victims the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and thus began a nuclear disaster whose scope is still not fully known, but will continue for generations to come. The news out of Japan these days is sparse, due to a newly-passed state secrets law that prohibits everyone from discussing the disaster (or any other bad news), and even prohibits journalists from asking questions about it, both punishable by long prison terms. Over here and in other parts of [...]

CPAC Madness

It's March, so time to break out the brackets. Since CPAC amazed and confused us this weekend, I thought I'd put together brackets to determine the king or queen of the conservatives. I couldn't decide if the competition should be for the craziest among them or who would be their 2016 nominee or, perhaps, if that was one and the same.  Either way, have fun with the bracket. Or use it as a dartboard... This morning,  RH Reality Check's Adele Stan - a survivor of many a CPAC - joined in to help me debrief this weekend's festivities.  Read Addie's [...]

Shocked!

I've known Michelle Shocked for about 25 years.  I first met her in 1988 when her label at the time put a bunch of radio people on a train from Los Angeles to San Diego and back for a performance to promote her first single, "If Love Was a Train" .    It was probably four or five years later that I first interviewed her. I had the pleasure of hosting Michelle Shocked on the air a number of times throughout my radio career.  One particularly wonderful,  memorable appearance was from August of 1994 at the now defunct but [...]

Rape, Rapists and Republicans

Today on the show we talked about the verdict in the Steubenville rape trial and about the insanity at CPAC.  And just moments after the show ended, a tweet crossed my stream from Mother Jones about this CPAC joke about Ashley Judd and rape.  Timing is everything, huh? CPAC: Where Ashley Judd Rape Jokes Happen bit.ly/15hDXEG — Mother Jones (@MotherJones) March 18, 2013   Although I took issue with Crooks & Liars proclaiming that Candy Crowley was "oozing sympathy" for the racists, the truth is that the media in general seemed to be more concerned about the rapists than they [...]

CPAC – Laughing Liberally

So the annual gathering of CPAC (Conservatives Pandering Asinine Convictions) starts tomorrow in DC.  Actually, not in Wasington, DC itself, but in nearby National Harbor, Maryland - ironically at the Gaylord National Hotel (ironic, because no gay lords or organizations are welcome). I began the show today be perusing the official program, having no idea how many laughs would ensue.  So feel free to glance through the guide and enjoy all the comedic offerings: CPAC 2013 Schedule The schedule boasts some can't miss book signings, like Beating Obamacare: Your Handbook for Surviving the New Health Care Law  by The Honorable Betsy McCaughey Spin Masters: How the [...]

Freedom

While watching the people of Egypt win their peaceful revolution Thursday, one song was playing on a loop in my mind. Freedom! While the people of Egypt have a long road ahead of them, they did it! They won freedom from a dictator who has ruled their world for over thirty years. But the real lesson here is that they did it through peaceful protests - no "second amendment remedies" necessary. To those who suggest we might be able to follow their lead here to get what we want, I wish it were that simple. We have a deeply divided [...]
