Monday Blahs

Welcome to Monday. Mondays are usually rough on a good day... but after one last week guest hosting The Randi Rhodes Show, followed by a weekend at the beach for my kid's 15th birthday, I could have used an additional day to get ready to return to the real world. But that didn't happen... so here we are. It was quiet day in terms of guests, but I'll get that fixed before tomorrow's show. We did get a new study this morning on waste, fraud and abuse in the publicly funded Charter school world. Put together by Integrity in Education [...]

CPAC Madness

It's March, so time to break out the brackets. Since CPAC amazed and confused us this weekend, I thought I'd put together brackets to determine the king or queen of the conservatives. I couldn't decide if the competition should be for the craziest among them or who would be their 2016 nominee or, perhaps, if that was one and the same.  Either way, have fun with the bracket. Or use it as a dartboard... This morning,  RH Reality Check's Adele Stan - a survivor of many a CPAC - joined in to help me debrief this weekend's festivities.  Read Addie's [...]

Get Up, Stand Up!

An activist dressed like a polar bear protests against the Keystone XL oil pipeline outside The White House in Washington February 3, 2014. (Reuters / Yuri Gripas) Yesterday, just a few days after the State Dept released it's latest report on the Keystone XL pipeline, opponents took to the streets in some 3o0 cities across the nation to say "Hell No!" This Saturday, many thousands are expected to join in the Moral March in Raleigh, NC. In Kiev and other cities in Ukraine, protesters are taking to the streets and risking their lives for their rights! When I [...]

Absurdity is the New Reality

The late Frank Zappa was way ahead of his time. Yes, Absurdity is the new Reality! Just a glance at the day's news is evidence of that. I began today's show with the news that hell has frozen over. The best explanation I've seen thus far about the DC Circuit Court ruling that rendered Net Neutrality dead comes from Fox "News"'s Shepard Smith! And then, he called his corporate shill of a guest a "corporate shill!". Once you pick your jaw up off the ground, watch this: Today, the Senate Finance Committee (under the exiting Max Baucus) will mark up [...]

Don’t Drink the Water – or- Nowhere to Run

We're killing the planet. Actually, more accurately, we're making this planet uninhabitable. The picture above is one of a few I saw posted around the interwebs this morning of the "water" that's coming out of faucets in Charleston, WV today - after authorities gave the all-clear and said the stuff was safe to drink, bathe in, and give your kids. Lovely, huh? And even though information from Japan about what's going on at and around Fukushima is now non-existent due to a new state secrets law that prohibits the dissemination of information (and even prohibits journalists from asking the questions!), [...]

ENDA the Hypocrisy, please

Today the Senate will pass the Employment Non Discrimination Act.  It's about time that people can no longer be fired because of their sexuality or sexual identity. The forces fighting to keep workplace discrimination legal seem to be doing so in the name of "religious liberty" - and even more damning is that the religion they're "protecting" is Christianity. Whoa! Does anyone else see the massive disconnect and overwhelming hypocrisy here? As a person of Jewish heritage who long ago used logic to rid herself of any organized religious beliefs, I do believe in the "golden rule".  I'll admit I'm [...]

Another Year Gone By…

So, today is my birthday.  At least I got a really good horoscope for today: You're the star, and opportunities abound this year. Fix up your home over the next five months. Expect a boost in creativity, partnership and romance over autumn and again in spring. Prepare to launch late next July. There's travel involved. Make an exciting career move, and grow skills. Bank your profits. And the general Scorpio outlook: You're surrounded by money-making opportunities, and by love. Don't close the door on opportunities. File them for later, if you can't manage all now. Have faith in your own imagination. [...]

My Birthday Wish

That's me... 53 years ago Sunday. My birthday often falls on election day. Ronald Reagan was elected on my 21st birthday. My first time in the voting booth, and I proudly voted for the candidate that lost. Barack Obama made history on my 49th birthday.  And this year, my big day comes two days before election day. People who regularly listen to my show and read this blog know that I always call things the way I see them.  Because of that, I've been attacked with pseudo-insults ever since by so-called liberals.  I've been called "emo-prog" and "firebagger" (whatever [...]

Filibuster Showdown

Could we really see an end to the dysfunction in the Senate? Perhaps not totally, but we could start down the road to reform tomorrow when the 112th Congress gets underway. I just taped an interview with historian/author/professor emerita at UCLA Joyce Appleby that will run on this morning's show.  To be honest, I didn't know of Joyce until I read her New Years Day piece on Huffington Post, The Urgency of a Senate Rule Change.  I then found an op-ed she wrote for the LA Times: "The Senate filibuster: Time for a change". After hearing the history of the [...]
