“Boca” Britany Somers, Nicole Sandler and Jorge Rodriguez

My friend Jorge Rodriguez died on Friday. He was having lunch with his daughter when he suffered a heart attack and died. I’m devastated.

I hadn’t seen Jorge in a while. But Brit and I were just talking about him, as I was bemoaning my studio troubles and whining that I needed a good engineer to come over and help me figure out the problems. Brit said, “Call Jorge!”.

I didn’t call. I emailed him. And I’m kicking myself because I should have picked up the fucking phone. Jorge never replied. It was just 2 or 3 days before he died. Brit told me that when she last spoke with Jorge, they talked about me and my studio. Of course Jorge said, “tell her to call… I’ll head right over.” Kicking myself because I didn’t get to say goodbye, and I can’t even recall the last time I spoke with him.

Back in December of 2010, we learned that WIOD was looking for a new afternoon show. WIOD was where Neil Rogers held court back in the day. It’s where Jorge and Boca first met and began a friendship and professional relationship that continued until Friday morning, July 3. It was the studio right next door to where I hosted mornings on WINZ. Yes, radio had become quite incestuous in the 2000s…

Anyway, Jorge, Brit and I sat down on Dec. 10, 2012 to put on a show to double as an audition for WIOD. We thought we’d call it “A Spic, a Chick and a Chick with a Dick.” We didn’t get the gig, but we sure had fun that day…
