Isaac has just been upgraded to hurricane status and by tonight will likely be barreling down on New Orleans, as New Orleanians already prepare to mark the 7th anniversary of Katrina tomorrow. The US Army Corps of Engineers says the $14 Billion of taxpayer money was spent by shoring up the levies, and that New Orleans is safer now than it’s ever been.. the problem is that that isn’t saying very much.
I reached out to Harry Shearer, best known for his comedic turns in Spinal Tap and The Simpsons, to talk about his role as a New Orleans resident and the filmmaker behind The Big Uneasy. He made the film to counter the media spin that the damage done to New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina was due to a “natural disaster.” My advice: listen to the interview with Harry and watch the film. And to the people of the Gulf coast, get the hell out of there…
While the Republican party is engaged in a massive circle jerk in Tampa, I decided to pull out an interview I conducted earlier this month at a more sensible gathering – the 27th Annual Veterans for Peace convention that was held here in Miami. Although I broadcast live from the event, I also recorded a few interviews off the air. This morning, I played back my conversation with David Schlesinger of Architects and Engineers for Truth.
The Truthers have been grouped in with the crazy birthers, I believe, unfairly, as they have some actual science behind their beliefs. At least this group isn’t pointing any fingers at who might be behind the explosions they believe were detonated inside the World Trade Center, just the science that says regular old fire – even fire caused by a jetliner ramming into the buildings like a missile – doesn’t cause steel to melt.
Regardless, try to listen with an open mind, and then wonder why there was no investigation. Just like we wonder why Mitt Romney won’t release his tax returns….
