Eighteen days out from election day, and a number of states are throwing up barriers to prevent people from voting. Today, Nicole Sandler is joined by Mother Jones' Ari Berman, author of Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America.
After an update on the day's news, including the president's calling out African nations, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" countries, I speak with investigative journalist Greg Palast about the GOP's latest efforts to keep us from voting Democratic. The newly updated version of Greg's movie, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy: The Case of the Stolen Election, is available now via Amazon (and you can stream for free with Amazon Prime).
Nicole attempts to get the facts behind the new "voter fraud commission" with the guy who's been telling us about Kris Kobach for years, independent investigative reporter Greg Palast. In a report published just as Greg came on the air with us today at The Progressive , Greg shows that even as 44 states say they won't cooperate with Kobach's request for voter data, at least 28 already have!
(via www.cartoonistgroup.com) When I opened my Los Angeles Times today, I spotted a letter written by someone I knew when I was a teeny tiny kid. He grew up to be awfully smart, as you'll see below. Trump has made much of how "voter fraud" (which is virtually non-existent) will hand the ("rigged!!!") presidential election over to Hillary because... everyone, but everyone, is conspiring against Don-Don. Everyone. In the whole wide world. (Reality check: Voter suppression is a much bigger problem than voter fraud.) As so many do, my very informed, very cool childhood friend set the Ignoramus in Chief straight. Here [...]
Nicole talks about the right wing outrage over Springsteen's performance of "Fortunate Son" at the Concert for Valor Tues night, and the rest of the right's disconnect with reality. Brad Friedman join in to recap the elections regarding voting machine/voter suppression effects on its outcome. Desi Doyen explains the climate agreement with China and the latest on the Keystone XL pipeline.
This email was sent to me by a regular reader of mine, and will make your heads explode. Verbatim: First, I live in one of the Tea Party strongholds of the nation in Southern Delaware.. Yes Delaware is the home of Joe Biden, but the lower part of the state is not Biden country. Also, I am disabled US Army Paratrooper.. not combat disabled, instead I learned that you cannot fight gravity.. so I have spinal issues and non-combat PTSD from the injury. Which means I shut-in, and most of the time if you saw me you would probably think [...]
Nicole talks about the issues with Susie Madrak of Crooks & Liars, and the GOP efforts to keep you from voting with BradBlog's Brad Friedman, plus more news, info and debates galore.
Another snark-filled guest post by the one, the only Will Durst: ONE MAN. ONE VOTE. Whiners. Bounders. Ingrates. Talking about the incessant griping and sniping currently buzzing over long overdue Republican reforms requiring citizens to produce a government issued ID before casting a vote. From the outcry you’d think the GOP was organizing competitive kitten clubbings. Again. Oh for crum’s sakes, settle down people. It’s just an ID. You need one to fly or buy or ply or even take out a library book. What is wrong with insuring the integrity of the electoral process? This isn’t voter suppression, it’s voter [...]
Last night, Rachel Maddow laid out disturbing Wisconsin Voter ID Law details. Republicans resort to cheating, gerrymandering, and voter suppression because they have nothing to run on. They've been on the losing side of the issues, their congressional leaders rely on obstruction rather than legislation, and their state legislators and governors eliminate voting rights in order to eliminate Democratic voters. They continue to be the party of discrimination. Rachel: Wisconsin is a state that has never had a documented case of voter fraud by way of impersonation... That's the kind of voter fraud that would, conceivably, be put off, deterred, stopped by [...]
As today's show ended, we were an hour away from the verdict in the Bradley Manning court martial. I have no numbers to back this up, but I'd guess that if you took a poll of the American people, the vast majority would have no clue that the trial was even happening, let alone who Manning is or what he's accused of doing. I do believe people are responsible for their lack of knowledge; but in this case, the blame rests just as squarely on the shoulders of the corporate media who has a vested interest in controlling the messages [...]
