Are You In?

I've never been a joiner.  I wore the marching to my own drummer badge proudly ever since I was an outsider in school.  I registered as a Democrat after spending years with No Party Affiliation (even though I've never voted for a Republican) so I could vote for John Edwards in the Florida primary in 2008.  I know what Edwards turned out to be... but during the primaries, he appeared to me to be the most electable progressive choice we had. I did, however, enthusiastically support Obama when he became the nominee.  And I've watched incredulously as my hopes for [...]

On Budgets, HAMP and Yemen

It was another busy day on the Randi Rhodes Show today. In the first hour, I welcomed The Hill's Brent Budowsky to help us try to understand the budget quagmire in Washington DC.  Honestly, I can't understand the rationale of Republicans who think that cutting programs to help the needy and cutting taxes on the wealthy individuals and corporations is the way to dig out of a devastating recession. In hour two, I was joined by David Dayen, who does an amazing job with the news at FireDogLake.  I asked to to come on to talk about the 10-part series [...]

What if…

What if we could go back in time for an hour and ask the founding fathers what they meant? Would we still allow just about anyone with enough money to buy a gun? What if the tea party was black? What if the Supreme Court hadn't overstepped its authority and appointed George W. Bush president? What if we hadn't invaded Iraq? So many "what ifs" I spend too much time pondering.  Today, we'll address the first two questions. Free Press Senior Editor and "Superpower of Peace" columnist Harvey Wasserman is also senior advisor to Greenpeace USA and the Nuclear Information [...]

Masturbation Can Be Fun

In an election year that's supposed to be deadly for Dems, the Republicans seem to be the ones going down, so to speak. As much as they hate the "Democrat" party, they seem to ignore the bigger picture: that by nominating candidates like Sharron Angle, Rand Paul, Joe Miller and now Christine O'Donnell, they've given us a nice big wet kiss. Or, for O'Donnell's sake, a somewhat satisfying hand job. On today's show, we'll delve into the opinions of Delaware's Republican Senatorial candidate, and the rest of yesterday's primary results with Ellen Ratner of the Talk Radio News Service, Christina [...]

Is it April 20 yet?

Mondays creep up on us entirely too quickly. But they always arrive and we deal with them... Today was a day I had been dreading, as I was truly frightened about what it might bring. Not because it's Monday, but because today is April 19, 2010 -- the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. It was a day that gun worshipers decided was a fitting day to hold pro-gun rallies in and near our nation's capital. Timothy McVeigh apparently chose April 19 as the date to bomb the federal building in Oklahoma City because two years earlier, the Branch [...]

Revolting Tea Party

Yes, it's April 15. The day we real Americans hand over a portion of our hard-earned money to insure that the commons are taken care of. We true patriots don't enjoy giving up a big portion of our income, but we realize that we must contribute so our country can take care of the infrastructure, so that our seniors get their Medicare and Social Security, and so that our military can keep us safe (or wage wars which, unfortunately, is what they're doing with most of our money now). But the tea baggers are out in force today, still claiming [...]

It’s a Health Care Kind of Week

It figures. The week there's finally movement on health care reform, is when I'll be in NY and not doing my regular shows.  But that's OK... I'll be checking in regularly and hope you will too. Here's my schedule for this week. Tomorrow, take my kid to the doctor. It figures, I'm leaving tomorrow night, and she's running 102.5 fever. Why do kids have a knack for making life difficult? Anyway, after the doctor visit, I'll continue doing laundry, packing and getting ready for the aforementioned trip to NY. Tomorrow night I'll go see Craig Ferguson do stand up. And [...]
