World Beyond War

Imagine a world a peace. A world where warfare is not the go-to strategy when conflict arises. It's an especially important vision today, when Iraq is, once again, a bloody mess. And it sickens me even more because the US is wholly responsible for that. Author and activist David Swanson, and retired Naval Commander and former national president of Veterans for Peace Leah Bolger joined me today to talk about this new project they're working on, World Beyond War: a global movement to end all wars. If ever there was a truly worthy goal, that's it. I've joined in to [...]

Cutting Through the Bullshit

"Political discourse" and "Bullshit" are synonymous these days. It often feels like we need a dictionary to decipher and unpack some of the drivel that comes out of politicians mouths.  Enter my old friend Stephen Goldstein. He's an op-ed columnist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and author of a number of books including one of my favorites, Atlas Drugged: Ayn Rand Be Damned. And now, he's back with The Dictionary of American Political Bullshit! It's a must-read, especially in today's political climate. Stephen joined in for a spirited discussion about bullshit this morning, and we had a spirited debate about [...]

The Corporate States of America with a Privatized FEMA

In one of the GOP's many primary debates, CNN's John King asked Mitt Romney that, in light of the disastrous recent weather events in Joplin, MO,  New Orleans and other cities, what should be done with FEMA?  Romney's answer was Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. [...] We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It [...]

Sandy!

Hurricane Sandy is now officially the biggest tropical cyclone in recorded history. As one who's lived through a few major hurricanes, obviously my thoughts and what passes for prayers in my world are with the millions of people in the path of the storm. That crazy image comes courtesy of my favorite weather source: Wunderground.com.  Dr. Jeff Masters has been a frequent guest on my show, but circumstances have him a bit too busy to come on today.  I will be checking his blog throughout today as I do both my show and Randi Rhodes' this afternoon. On my [...]

Atlas Scared

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120712_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Atlas_Scared.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window I'm back to my regular schedule today, as Randi Rhodes returns to her radio perch this afternoon.  But as I always do when I guest host her show, I had a blast over the past few weeks.  It's an honor to be entrusted with her microphone and loyal listeners, and I hope we'll have some new friends joining us here at RadioOrNot.  BTW, I'll be back in for Randi next Friday, July 20, when she heads to Seattle for KPTK's big progressive soiree... In the meantime, the show goes [...]

SCOTUS: The Good, The Good, and The Very Ugly!

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120625_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_SCOTUS_Part_1.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window As my show started at 10am ET, I had one eye glued to the SCOTUSblog live blog coverage of their decisions.  There was a very good decision today in the ruling that said juveniles couldn't be given life sentences without the possibility of parole.  There was another good decision, for the most part, on Arizona's SB1070, which struck down most of that heinous law, but kept the "paper-please" portion (though without commenting on what should be done with the information that someone stopped is or is not in the country legally). [...]

Why Do You Think They Call It Flori-DUH?

Listen to this episode: {play }http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120531_Nicole_Sandler_Show__Floriduh.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window Oh Floriduh, you break my heart.  First, you screw things up so terribly you give the presidency to a loser (in more ways than one) in 2000.  then, in 2010, you elect Volermort to the Governor's office, and put a war criminal - Allen West - into Congress. It's bad enough that you continuing punishing felons long after they've paid their debt to society by denying them their right to vote, but now you want to, almost arbitrarily, take away the vote from citizens just because their name [...]

Atlas Drugged: Ayn Rand Be Damned!

Today is tax day, but there are many among us who don't want to pay their fair share of taxes.  If Paul Ryan - who gives a copy of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged to all of his staffers and requires they read it - had his way, the wealthiest among us would pay even less in taxes than they already do, while the rest of us would get hit with a bigger bill each year at this time. But at what cost?  We're already headed on the road to austerity.  The rich keep getting richer while the rest [...]

Caucus Casualty

The Iowa caucuses are history.  We could call it much ado about nothing, as it really doesn't mean anything at all.  Except to Michelle Bachmann to called it quits today after her last place finish yesterday. It is truly a loss for comedians everywhere.  But honestly, I'm just thrilled I don't have to hear her call it the Unined States any more.  We did however learn that President Obama is a socialist and, left to his devices, America would become a Socialist country, and "obamacare" will destroy American society and life as we know it. We also learned to pronouce [...]

It’s Not the Eye, but the Tongue of Newt that’s the Problem

It must be cursed. Poor Newt Gingrich can't catch a break.  In 1993, he stood with the Republican party in trying to defeat "Hillary Care" and spoke passionately about the need for an individual mandate.  He pretty much echoed those ideas last Sunday on Meet The Press.  Watch for yourself: Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy What was that you said about the Ryan plan to privatize Medicare Newt? Newt: "I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering. I don't think imposing radical change from the right or [...]
