Another Monday, Another Shit Storm

We're now officially in the dog days of August, and things are supposed to be slooow.  But nooo.  Not in America in 2010.  We haven't had a slow news week in over a year, it seems. In the car just a few minutes ago, we were listening to Rachel Maddow (on XM channel 120), and she heard about the Target boycott due to the fact that they donated $150,000 to MN Forward, a PAC who used the funds to purchase TV ads for GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmers, a staunch opponent of marriage equality.  She looked at me and said, [...]

Wednesday Busy Wednesday

What a show we have for you tonight.  Unfortunately, I have no time for the rest of the interviews I taped at Netroots Nation... all the more reason to tune in tomorrow night! Of course, the big story today comes from Arizona, where US District Court Judge Susan Bolton blocked the most controversial sections of SB 1070, which was slated to take effect tomorrow.  The law will still go into effect tomorrow, but without the most heinous provisions-- including the sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws, and the parts that required immigrants [...]

I’m Baack!

What a way to return, huh?  I was preparing to ease back into work slowly.  But shortly after I awakened yesterday morning, I got a call from Randi Rhodes' executive producer John Manzo telling me that Randi was sick, and asking if I could fill in for her.  Of course I said yes.  No way I'd turn down that opportunity... So, I sprung into action, and started reading and booking guests for the show. I had already planned to return to do my show last night...so I figured I'd do another marathon broadcasting day.  Unfortunately, it took its toll on [...]

It’s Monday, and Day 70 of the Gulf/BP Disaster

With no end in sight. Ugh. Aside from the ongoing tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico, today was a busy news day. Senator Robert Byrd died this morning. If nothing else, he should be remembered for speaking out against the war in Iraq. Check the bottom of this post for the video of that wise and prescient speech. The Supreme Court ruled against states rights on gun control. I guess we're returning to the wild west. Today is also the last day of this term of the Supreme Court, and the last day Justice John Paul Stevens sits on the [...]

About Last Night…

Sorry for the delay in posting last night's show. I've been somewhat sidelined by the flu, so am moving at a slower pace than normal...  Better late than never, I suppose. We were also plagued by some technical problems last night. I'm pretty sure I've got those figure out, so tonight should be flawless. (I hope you found the humor in that statement!) Last night's show included a conversation with filmmaker Zach Roberts, who's working on "The Rogue Candidate: Sarah Palin's REAL Alaska."  We got our regular Monday night news update from Victoria Jones at the Talk Radio News Service. [...]

Earth Day, Defeating Boehner & the Teabagger Boogie

What a way to end the week... It was a busy show tonight. So click on the player above, and here's what you'll hear: Since today is Earth Day, we started the show with a conversation with Jeff Regen, VP of Online Communications for Defenders of Wildlife. In addition to a campaign to urge people to dedicate a day of service to the earth, they've also spearheaded a drive to make Discovery Inc rethink its terrible idea to air a program on its TLC channel called "Sarah Palin's Alaska." There is a light at the end of the Boehner tunnel. [...]

Political Theater, Political Carnival & Politics As Usual

I've often said we'd be much better off if we could just get the politics out of government. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen any time soon... In recent years, Republicans have been better at political theater than the Dems, but some on the left are catching up. The Yes Men have been doing great political theater, mostly in the climate change arena. (Their latest film "The Yes Men Fix The World" is out today on DVD.) The women of Code Pink have been active in this arena too, but recently seem to have learned a thing or two about [...]

Tuesday Talk with Shannyn Moore & Bob Cesca

It's a Tuesday that felt like a Saturday to me. That's only because school's out this week, so I have my kid under foot. And my sister is in town for a photography event called After Dark. So, today, my daughter Alison and I headed down to South Beach where she was a model. My sister promised to turn her into a mermaid and a fairy. 'Nuff said! I'll post the pictures when I get them back. In the meantime, here's one I took with my cell phone while we were waiting... (Yes, there's a reason my sister [...]

Health Care and Mormons and Hate Speak, Oh My!

**Podcast audio fixed.  Somehow, Tuesday's show was originally re-posted. Click on the player to hear the correct audio.  Sorry for the inconvenience!  NS** Today, I watched President Obama's final speech on Health Care Reform. And he said nothing. Nothing new, anyway. It was the same old shit. Same old pandering to the right. Same old sidestepping the public option -- the one fix that could get much of his former base back on board, but that, for reasons still completely obscured, he ignores. The same old Obama, trying to please everyone and, by doing that, pleasing no one... except the [...]
