What Do They Stand For?

Before today's show began, I spent some time listening to the House Energy & Commerce Committee hearing on Healthcare.gov's problems.  Today, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was in the hot seat. When I tuned in, she was being questioned berated by TN Representative Marsha Blackburn who couldn't have been any more shrill or nasty if she tried. I'm pissed about the problems too, and I think that Sebelius should probably be fired for the disaster.   But that doesn't excuse the lack of civility displayed, not only by Blackburn but by her GOP colleagues on the committee as well. They bitched (and [...]

Laughter and Lust… and everything in between

We covered a lot of territory on the show this morning, but the overriding theme was laughter.  After the last few weeks, I thought we needed some "funny" to counter the angst. I promised another edition of Oy, FloriDUH.. so here it goes (note: there is nothing even remotely funny about any of these stories - but taken together, they show the absurdity of life in America's penis): #1 Police in Jacksonville arrest and reportedly assault a man for walking while black on the wrong side of the street. First Coast News obtained court papers which state that Wingate was walking [...]

We Need a Progressive Governor in Florida

There's one running and that's Nan Rich.  I've had two opportunities to question her - the second time was this morning on my show - and she answered each and every question exactly as I'd hoped she would. The first time I interviewed her was a few weeks ago at the Boca Raton-Delray Beach Democratic Club.  You can watch that Q&A here, as we livestreamed the event:  This morning, she joined me for a one-on-one conversation and, again, I am so impressed. Not only do we need to rid ourselves of the embarrassment and scourge on our state that is [...]

Royal Baby-Free Zone

I love babies.  But I don't get the American obsession with the newest member of the luckiest sperm club in the world.  So, the title of this post is the only mention you'll get here concerning the baby born yesterday in London.  I don't think royalty has any place in our 21st century reality. Today on the show, I paid tribute to the late Helen Thomas by re-broadcasting the two interviews I was fortunate enough to have conducted with her - both from my days at Air America Radio. The first one was originally aired on October 7, 2009. It [...]

Atlas Scared

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120712_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Atlas_Scared.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window I'm back to my regular schedule today, as Randi Rhodes returns to her radio perch this afternoon.  But as I always do when I guest host her show, I had a blast over the past few weeks.  It's an honor to be entrusted with her microphone and loyal listeners, and I hope we'll have some new friends joining us here at RadioOrNot.  BTW, I'll be back in for Randi next Friday, July 20, when she heads to Seattle for KPTK's big progressive soiree... In the meantime, the show goes [...]

Rick Scott is Making Florida Sick, Literally

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120710_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Rick_Scott_is_Making_Florida_Sick.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window So, the governor who was elected even though his company had to pay the government a $1.5 Billion fine for Medicare fraud (the largest in US history) is messing with peoples health again.  I'm not talking about the fact the Rick "Voldemort" Scott was one of the first to proclaim he'd opt out of the Affordable Care Act's Medicare expansion, or to say that he'd not implement any of the ACA provisions until after the presidential election.  This is even worse. Rick Scott, under the auspices of budget cutting, [...]

What Really Happened in WI and Why You Must Care

Listen to this episode: {play}Wisconsin, recall, Walker, Koch, Lisa Graves, Florida, Rick Scott, purge, Sargent Shriver {/play} Play in new window Live video for mobile from Ustream The annual Netroots Nation gathering came at the perfect time this year.  It followed, by two days, the stinging defeat of the recall of Scott Walker as Wisconsin's governor, and gave us the chance to figure out what went wrong and regroup as we head toward November.   The really odd thing is that the exit polls showed solid support for President Obama's re-election, yet many of the same people who support Obama [...]

Awake The State

Florida has been the land of apathy for far too long.  The heat and humidity have now given way to activism. Today marks the start of the 2012 Florida Legislative Session, and criminal Governor Rick Scott's second State of the State address.  We the people of Florida will not sit back silently and watch those up in Tallahassee impose their will on the rest of us. Nineteen cities in Florida are hosting Awake The State rallies today.  You can find one near you here.  I've been invited to speak at the one in Palm Beach; I'll be delivering the response to Scott's [...]

Wake Up FloriDUH!

I've heard that some group is considering launching a "worst state government" contest.  Certainly, there are lots of contenders.  Wisconsin surely comes to mind, as Scott Walker apparently believes he was elected dictator rather than governor.  Of course, the Wisconsin state senate is full of lawmakers so disliked by the electorate for facilitating Walker's union-busting plans, that paperwork has been filed to recall all 16 of them who are eligible for recall this year (those in their second year in office). And then there's Rick Snyder in Michigan, who also thinks his powers as governor allows him to kill democracy [...]

Friday, revisited

I don't usually do a show on Fridays.  I was planning to spend Friday doing what I did for the rest of the weekend -- packing everything that was left in my soon-to-be former house.  But I awoke to an email asking if I could start my week-long fill-in stint for Randi Rhodes as day earlier, as her dog Simon had taken a turn for the worse. So, fill-in I did, gladly.  It turned out to be a pretty great show.  And I was happy to be working doing something I love rather than working packing and moving, if you [...]
