8-6-21 Nicole Sandler Show – The Other Side of the Olympics with Jules Boykoff

Download here or click below to play, (or watch the video at the bottom of the page!)   I first spoke with today's guest, author and political scientist Jules Boykoff, five years ago just ahead for the Rio Olympics. He had just released his book, Power Games: A Political History of the Olympics. I was fascinated by the stories that NBC never seems to include in their slick, pre-packaged video feature-ettes. When contemplating how to cover those under-reported stories as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are underway -- a year late and live audiences short. So Jules Boykoff joins us for [...]

8-3-16 Nicole Sandler Show – Another Test Day

I was out today, having an EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound), which was every bit as uncomfortable as you'd image looking at the graphic above. So instead of a live show, I put together an abbreviated Best Of today... First up, some words of wisdom from the Rev. Dr. William Barber. After his rousing speech at the DNC, we pulled out the interview Nicole did with Dr. Barber at Netroots Nation in Detroit in 2014. And with the Olympics opening ceremonies happening Friday night, we thought this was a good day to listen back to Nicole's conversation with Jules Boykoff, author [...]

7-6-16 Nicole Sandler Show – History Keeps Repeating

We awoke to an awful déjà vu this morning. Another black man was killed by cops in a show of excessive, brutal police force. Alton Sterling, a 37-year old father of five, was selling CDs in front of a convenience store, something he did regularly to help support his family. Someone called the cops on him, and now Alton Sterling is dead. We are talking about it because someone captured the shooting on video. And now a second video has surfaced. And tomorrow, the trial begins for the most senior of the cops who was involved in the wild [...]

Music Can Soothe the Savage Beast

It can.. I know that music certainly helps me when I'm feeling off. After hearing about a murder trial that some misguided members of the media decided to call the "Loud Music Trial" (instead of the Jordan Davis murderer trial), I decided to turn the spotlight on how music is helping raise money for some truly progressive candidates. The Blue America PAC just wrapped up a truly special fundraiser for Congressman Alan Grayson.  Grayon's favorite artist is Joni Mitchell (click through for my print interview with her from a few years back), so all who donated to his campaign through [...]

Still Marching!

Fifty years later, we're still marching. Fifty years (and six months) ago, 200,00-300,ooo people turned out for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This past Saturday 80,00-100,0o0 showed up in Raleigh North Carolina for the Moral March , something that has actually been happening in Raleigh every February since 2007 as part of the HKonJ -Historic Thousands on Jones Street (where the legislature meets). Writing about the march for RH Reality Check, PFAW's Peter Montgomery explains Last year’s merciless legislative assault on voting rights, public education, health care, and poor families gave progressive organizing a renewed urgency. Multimillionaire [...]

My Gay Russian Olympic Fantasy

(L-R) Gold medalist Tatyana Firova and Kseniya Ryzhova of Russia kiss on the podium during the medal ceremony for the Women's 4x400 metres Relay during Day Eight of the 14th IAAF World Athletics Championships Moscow 2013 at Luzhniki Stadium on August 17, 2013 in Moscow, Russia The photo posted above is of two Russian track & field athletes on the medal podium during the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Moscow last year. I hope they're safe and weren't hurt after showing that public display of gay affection. My fantasy for the 2014 Sochi Olympics is that that scene [...]

NBC Big Olympic Fail

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120730_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_NBC_Fail.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window I know I risk being banned from Twitter for criticizing NBC's Olympic coverage, but I just can't help myself. The beautiful image above wasn't seen by the millions of Americans who tuned in - via tape delay - to the Opening Ceremonies of the XXX Olympiad in London. (Britain's Guy Adams' Twitter account was suspended after repeated tweets criticizing NBC and at least one containing the email address of an NBC executive!) But I have so many things to complain about that I'll take the risk. 1. Stop with [...]
