19 Railroad Cars of Oil Blew Up … and Left Still Burnin’ in West Virginia

In 2015.  This isn't some Depression Era cautionary singalong. Happened the day before yesterday. Seriously. Neon mushroom clouds that the locals had, prior to this oil-rail debacle, only seen in movies were West Virginians first clue that more snow than usual was not their worst problem this February. Their worst problem was this: a regular-route, thought to have 'modern' tank-car-hauling train, moving more than 100 tankers of crude oil from North Dakota to the Eastern seaboard, derailed, spilled oil into the nearby river … then exploded into the aforementioned super-balls of flame near the ironically named Mount Carbon, W.V.. [...]

Oil Spills, Birth Control and Religious Hypocrisy

The Supreme Court today heard a challenge to the Affordable Care Act's mandated coverage of contraceptives. Two cases of corporations owned by religious zealots trying to impose their religious beliefs on their employees while claiming their religious rights are being infringed upon (welcome to opposite world) were rolled into this one hearing before the highest court in the land. It looks like the audio from today's arguments won't be posted until Friday. When it is posted, it will be found here.) Meanwhile, the Obama administration just lifted the ban that kept BP from pursuing new leases in the Gulf of [...]

Spring Break

It is spring break in South Florida this weekend, but it's actually more like Spring Broken! First, the obvious! Technical problems prove that my system is broken. I tried to fix my phone problems over the weekend and seem to have made matters worse (damned Mac update!). I'll try to fix those problems before hitting the air tomorrow morning. The other broken things just might be above my pay grade! Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez disaster - and 25 years later, we're all still paying the price. Shannyn Moore was there and wrote about it. For [...]

On Oil Spills, Warfare, Websites and Wingnuts

I try to end each week with a break from the very serious subjects that often consume my shows and posts.  John Fugelsang joins me on Thursday mornings to help us laugh about some of the craziness we have to face each and every day. Today we didn't have a lot of laughs.  War hit very close to home this week.  Yesterday, we learned that photojournalist Tim Hetherington was killed while covering the war in Libya.  And yes, it is a war. I only met Tim once, and it was via phone.  I had the pleasure of interviewing him last [...]

Randi's taking a much-deserved day off today, and I'm thrilled and grateful that she's once again asked me to fill in for her!  I hope you'll join in.  I've got some great guests lined up, but made sure to leave lots of time for your calls at 866-87-RANDI (866-877-2634). You can listen live through any of Randi's affiliates, and I'll have the video stream going too. Of course, the big news continues to be the biggest environmental disaster in our history. Today is Day 60 of the Gulf geyser. Although it's been a busy week of dealing with the disaster, [...]

Scientists Warn Gulf of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured “Beyond Repair”

I talked about and read some of this article on the show tonight. Although the facts seem to be there, and the characters mentioned in the article are real, there is ample controversy surrounding the author. So, take this with a grain of salt.  Obviously, we don't know what's happening a mile below the water's surface, and this scenario is as likely as not... -NS Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured Beyond Repair Contributed by Sorcha Faal // Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:38 View: Contributor's biography | More stories By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western [...]

Day 45 and Counting…

When the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on Earth Day - April 20 - I don't think any of us ever thought we'd be here today, talking about the disaster it started. But here we are, 45  days and somewhere around 185 million gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf later, we're hearing more BP horror stories and seeing horrific images of of birds and marine creatures dead and dying. It's the unimaginable, but it's real. And with each passing day, it's more and more apparent that no one - not BP, not the government - NO ONE KNOWS [...]
