Occupy the Ballot Box

Today, Republicans are voting here in Florida. I couldn't vote as I'm most certainly not a Republican! But I did talk with two occupy protesters today - one in DC and one in Oakland - both of whom seemed to understand the need to occupy the ballot box. First up, I spoke with Eric Loetke, a PTA dad and Occupy DC protester.  Although the DC Parks Police issued a deadline of noon yesterday for both encampments at McPherson Sqaure and Freedom Plaza to be cleared, the police have yet [...]

Today’s Show- Mon Nov 14 – Occupy Oakland Raided Again

For an hour or so prior to the start of this morning's show, I was simulcasting the live video stream from Spencer (@OakFoSho) as the Oakland PD and law enforcement from surrounding cities once again raided the Occupy Oakland encampment at Oscar Grant Park. My friend Joshua Holland (senior writer and editor at AlterNet) lives in San Francisco and was once again on the scene as the raid happened.  He joined me by phone at the end of the first hour to discuss what went on during the pre-dawn hours this morning, and wrote about it: "Thousands of [...]

Occupy’s Asshole Problem: Flashbacks from An Old Hippie

Note from Nicole ... This post was written by my friend Sara Robinson, a senior fellow at the Campaign for America's Future.   I hope that any assholes who think they're acting as part of the Occupy movement will read it and take heed....   Occupy's Asshole Problem: Flashbacks from An Old Hippie   By Sara Robinson November 4, 2011 I wish I could say that the problems that the Occupy movement is having with infiltrators and agitators are new. But they're not. In fact, they're problems that the Old Hippies who survived the 60s and 70s remember [...]

When the Bad Deeds of a Few Destroy the Good Work of Many

The people of Oakland California stood up for their rights yesterday, and most of them did it following the rules of the Occupy movement: peaceful, non-violent protests.  That's the message the stalwart members of Occupy Oakland wanted to present yesterday and, for most of the day, that was the picture.  Unfortunately, as in any large crowd, there are a few who want to play by their own rules. Some anarchists and perhaps provocateurs infiltrated and broke some windows, sprayed graffiti, and spread the wrong message.  But they were the minority of the marchers participating in yesterday's general strike. This is [...]

STRIKE!

The last time our nation saw a General Strike was in 1946, in Oakland.  As Think Progress recounts, Over the course of two days in December 1946, 130,000 workers in Oakland refused to work out of solidarity with a strike by 400 mostly female retail clerks in which police were intervening. Union officials called the massive strike a “worker’s holiday.” All stores but pharmacies and food markets were shut down. After two days, the general strike ended when the city government pledged police neutrality in future strikes. The retail strike continued for another five months before being resolved. AlterNet's Joshua Holland, [...]

This is What Democracy Looks Like

That was the scene in Oakland last night - following two nights of brutal police action that resulted in one 24-year old Marine, two-tour Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen hospitalized, in critical condition, with a skull fracture and swelling of the brain.  The occupiers in Oakland were not to be deterred.  If anything, this police action probably intensified their resolve. At this meeting, as AlterNet's Joshua Holland recounted on this morning's show, those present voted in favor of a general strike to happen on Wednesday, November 2. From OccupyOakland.org: Below is the proposal passed by the Occupy Oakland General Assembly [...]

The City of Oakland has Blood on its Hands

So this is what America has come to?   I showed video on the ustream stream this morning of this man (at the time, I believed it to be a woman).  When the Oakland PD fired teargas grenades at the crowd, it scattered.  A few people noticed someone lying unconscious on the street.  He had obviously hit by something.... When a group of them went back to help the injured person, one of the cops took aim directly at them. There are a number of videos showing the incident.  By the way, the guy lying wounded in the street who was [...]

It’s Getting Ugly Out There

As I was preparing for the show this morning, reports started crossing my twitter stream of violent police action against the protesters at Occupy Oakland.   The picture above was taken by someone on the scene... Hundreds of cops in riot gear, including officers from surrounding municipalities as backup... against peaceful protesters. This video was shot by someone there and posted on the ustream account of punkboyinsf.  At around 16:00 in, you see a citizen journalist thrown to the ground by police;  at around 17:00, tear gas is used; He was livestreaming via his cellphone (something I'll have [...]
