We Need a Progressive Governor in Florida

There's one running and that's Nan Rich.  I've had two opportunities to question her - the second time was this morning on my show - and she answered each and every question exactly as I'd hoped she would. The first time I interviewed her was a few weeks ago at the Boca Raton-Delray Beach Democratic Club.  You can watch that Q&A here, as we livestreamed the event:  This morning, she joined me for a one-on-one conversation and, again, I am so impressed. Not only do we need to rid ourselves of the embarrassment and scourge on our state that is [...]

The Whistleblowers’ Lament

What a difference a decade makes! Back in 2002, Time magazine named "The Whistleblowers" the Person(s) of the Year!  Today, the same publication - according to whistleblower Jesselyn Radack writing at Daily Kos   joins the Obama administration in equating whistleblowers with spies, a characterization aimed at silencing other potential whistleblowers. As I wrote yesterday, the magazine's cover story is a complete disaster. It pictures hacktivist Aaron Swartz, National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden & WikiLeaks defendant Bradley Manning under the screaming words, "THE INFORMERS." Worse, it ignores key facts, the law, and the magazine's prior recognition of whistleblowers when it named "The [...]

Racism is Alive and Well in America

I could think of no better topic for today's show than the chronic problem of racism in America. I am not a supporter of Eric Holder's.  I think he's done a lousy job as Attorney General, but he sure did deliver a brilliant speech at the NAACP convention in Orlando yesterday. In case you missed it, it's worth a view or a read of the transcript. I played some of the pertinent parts on the show this morning, including these quotes: This afternoon I want to assure you of two things: I am concerned about this case and  - and [...]

Fighting Back with Funny!

Yesterday, I wrote about the GOP's "rebranding" effort following their "autopsy" in the wake of the 2012 elections.  Let it be known that they're doing the exact opposite of everything recommended in that report. Just today, in his Plum Line blog at the Washington Post, Greg Sargent marveled at the backwards nature of today's Republican Party in "GOP opposition to gay workplace equality will do wonders for that 'makeover'" -  a piece about the fact that ENDA (The Employment Non-Discrimination Act) today passed out of the Senate Health and Education Committee with votes from three Republicans (Kirk, Murkowski and Hatch), [...]

America – Still the Land of the Free?

I don't question the "home of the brave" - that was proven again earlier this week when 17 firefighters lost their lives demonstrating their bravery while truly trying to protect some fellow Americans.   But is America still the 'land of the free"? I don't think so. The Bill of Rights has been gutted - except for the Second Amendment, which is the only on the Republican Party seems to care about, even though they ignore its first four words "A well-regulated militia". And although, via the documents released by Edward Snowden, we now know that the Fourth Amendment [...]

Everybody Knows

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded  Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed  Everybody knows that the war is over  Everybody knows the good guys lost  Everybody knows the fight was fixed  The poor stay poor, the rich get rich  That's how it goes  Everybody knows --Leonard Cohen I'm a bit confused.  But everything today seems to be inside out and backwards... we are firmly in opposite world again (not that we ever left). My twitter stream is overflowing with so-called progressives excoriating Edward Snowden for blowing the whistle on the ever-growing intrusive surveillance of Americans - because, well, he [...]

She’s Gone – Crazy Bachmann Edition

As much as I would have loved to see her go down on election night, the news that Michele Bachmann will not seek a 5th term in the US House of Representatives was a welcome way to start the day.  My only regret is that the hard drive containing the last 5 years of news audio clips died last week, so I wasn't able to pull together my own fitting tribute of her craziest statements. Even her video announcing that she won't seek re-election is bizarre.  Just check out her smile and giddiness during the announcement. Even funnier are her [...]

I’m an Atheist too

My favorite video story in the wake of the Moore, OK tornado was not the elderly woman's dog emerging safely from the rubble during her interview (though it did warm my cockles), or of the teachers who risked their own lives to save the children in their care, or the many images of children and parents reuniting. No, it was Wolf Blitzer showing his true ineptitude when he said to a woman who escaped harm, "You got to thank the Lord, right?"   When she didn't respond to his expectations (I guess he though she should drop to her knees [...]

The Real Scandal

Last night at my daughter's softball game, I was chatting with one of the other moms about our daughters entering high school in the fall.  The other mom told me that her daughter was joining ROTC because she's always wanted to go into the military.  I smiled gently and just said "I hope that we're not fighting any wars by the time she graduates."  But hidden behind my tentative smile was the sadness in knowing that if this young woman does join the military, she has a greater than 1 in 4 chance of being raped while serving her country. [...]

Mayday Mayday!

It's the first day of May and, yes, we do need help.  The inmates seem to be running the asylum.  People like Michele Bachmann have got to go, so that's why I spoke with Jim Graves this morning. Jim Graves jumped into the race late in 2012, and came thisclose to sending Michele home to Marcus.  This time, he's in early, and stands a really good chance of making Congressman Bachmann history. I was so impressed with every answer he gave to every question I asked! I hope you'll take the time to listen to our conversation.  In the meantime, [...]
