Fever, FOIA and Flashback Friday

Nicole Sandler has the latest on the Ebola scare and the rest of the day's news. Vice News' Jason Leopold tells us about his latest trip to Guantanamo Bay. And we rock into the weekend on Flashback Friday with Nicole's 1999 interview with The Jayhawks and Old 97's.

A Bucket of Ice Water

When Homer Simpson joins in, you know you've gone viral. Although the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised awareness about the disease and a lot of money, there's so much we still don't know about it - thus the need for a campaign like this one. Homer challenged Donald Trump who actually dumped water on that thing on his head, proving that his hair really looks like that! I hope that dump also included a hefty donation! My favorite is still this 2-year old I'm pretty confident in guessing that most people didn't know what ALS was before this month [...]

Fighting Back with Funny!

Yesterday, I wrote about the GOP's "rebranding" effort following their "autopsy" in the wake of the 2012 elections.  Let it be known that they're doing the exact opposite of everything recommended in that report. Just today, in his Plum Line blog at the Washington Post, Greg Sargent marveled at the backwards nature of today's Republican Party in "GOP opposition to gay workplace equality will do wonders for that 'makeover'" -  a piece about the fact that ENDA (The Employment Non-Discrimination Act) today passed out of the Senate Health and Education Committee with votes from three Republicans (Kirk, Murkowski and Hatch), [...]

America – Still the Land of the Free?

I don't question the "home of the brave" - that was proven again earlier this week when 17 firefighters lost their lives demonstrating their bravery while truly trying to protect some fellow Americans.   But is America still the 'land of the free"? I don't think so. The Bill of Rights has been gutted - except for the Second Amendment, which is the only on the Republican Party seems to care about, even though they ignore its first four words "A well-regulated militia". And although, via the documents released by Edward Snowden, we now know that the Fourth Amendment [...]

No More War, Please

On this day, every year, we honor and remember those who died while serving in the armed forces of the United States.  My wish on this and every other day is that no more people die in war. A young John Kerry, upon returning from Vietnam, participated in the Winter Soldier investigation to talk about the atrocities and war crimes perpetrated by our people during that war.  It's a good idea to watch Kerry's testimony, and remember his question, "Who'll be the last to die for a mistake?". Today, I hosted a special edition of my show.  On Thursday, President [...]

Scandalous!

The GOP is at it again.  That bastion of social welfare, the Heritage Foundation (they must be an organization devoted to doing work in the realms of Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals as they enjoy tax-exempt status under their 501(c)3 designation, right?)  wrote a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor urging them to stop doing the work they were sent to Washington to do in favor of ratcheting up "scandals" in the Obama administration. [...]

Casting Aspersions on Asparagus… or … Louie Go-Home-rt

I often joke about Opposite World, as it is all to often the case that we seem to be living in a place where everything is just wrong.  But when in opposite world, one can at least find some semblance of reason - misguided as it may be.  In the case of Texas four-term Congressman Louie Gohmert, there is no line of reasoning that can help us figure out what the hell he is talking about! Yes, Gohmert was a runner-up in Bill Maher's "America's Craziest Congressperson" contest, for good reason.  But his performance in yesterday's House Judiciary hearing with [...]

We’ve Got To Get Out of This Place!

Finally, we're talking about the horrible reality of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay again. Unfortunately, it took 100+ prisoners on a hunger strike to get Americans angry about the fact that we're holding them without due process.  Eighty-six of the 166 or so prisoners there have been cleared for release, yet there they are, many of them refusing to eat as they feel dying would be preferable than continuing their imprisonment at our hands. Jason Leopold has been doing remarkable reporting on what's going on at Gitmo for years now over at Truthout.  For the best explanation of the [...]
