A sampling of this week’s political carnage

Another snark-filled guest post by the one, the only Will Durst: THIS WEEK IN POLY TICKS And now for your weekly update in the world of poly ticks. Run for your lives, people, because it’s complete chaos out there. In the pre- summer rush to wrangle positive press; current presidential candidates, potential presidential candidates, former presidential candidates, former presidents, and current presidents are viciously competing for track space in a freakish spectacle of careening into walls and spinning out of control like souped- up bumper cars during a power surge. To say it is not a pretty sight is similar to [...]

The ugly Bush stain: “It’s not too soon to judge. It’s far, far too late.”

Please stop what you're doing for a minute and read  "It's not too soon to judge George W. Bush's presidency on key issues," an L.A. Times Op-Ed from Feb. 5. See that vile little reminder above? That "Ugly Bush Stain" image is one I've used repeatedly over the past few years, and its impact is reflected in today's Los Angeles Times letter to the editor... because our voices matter: It's about time that someone published what many Americans thought at the time and continue to think today: Bush was a disaster. His legacy will be a stain upon the United States for generations to [...]

Trudeau’s Doonesbury “has specialized in Bush busting since Day One.” We owe you one.

We so owe Garry Trudeau. Who else has been so consistently consistent when it comes to skewering the Bushes and nailing their collective essence both visually and written with such exquisite precision? If the truth hurts, then this must be excruciating for W, Jebby, Poppy, and Babs. You know, kind of like the pain they've put the rest of us through for decades: Fraudulent wars, economic ruin, torture, you name it. And that's just George W... Don't even get me started on John Ellis (AKA "Jeb") "Privatization R Us" Bush or Barbara "They're underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for [...]

What I will not write about today: Infuriating news + snark chaser

Sometimes I get so frustrated and/or disheartened and/or annoyed by some of the news stories of the day that I can’t bring myself to write about them. Here are a few recent reports that made my blood pressure hit the roof. I am avoiding delving into them at length out of concern for my physical and mental health. CIA torture report not likely to result in reforms or prosecutions: "The Justice Department has cast the matter as a closed case... Federal prosecutors will not reopen their investigation of whether criminal laws were broken by CIA guards and interrogators for mistreating [...]

“‘Dither’ is the Republican word for “think” (VIDEO)

On "The Last Word," there was a segment devoted to how President's Obama is trying to deal with ISIS, including his order for an airstrike on terrorists in Somalia (see video above). Naturally, the names John McCain and Lindsey Graham were inserted into the conversation, because what would criticism of the president be without mention of war hawks like Grampy McBombBomb and his sidekick L'il Lindsey? Or someone else whose name rhymes with Schmee Schmouble-U Schmush?  Lawrence O'Donnell: "We're also living in the aftermath of the complete lack of a George W. Bush long term strategy for what it meant for the United States of America to invade, occupy, take [...]

Veterans Day – What Are We Fighting For?

Every year on November 11, we honor our nation's veterans.  It was just 18 months  ago that, as we were approaching Memorial Day, that Chris Hayes came under fire for saying that not all who fought (and died) in war were necessarily heroes. I had been watching his show that day, and agreed with him.  He came under massive fire and, if memory serves, finally gave in and apologized.  And that's where he lost me. Today, although I join with the nation to thank those who serve to protect our country, I also beg everyone to ask loudly, "What are [...]

How Can We Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120801_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_MittTwitisms_vs_Bushisms.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   That's an actual billboard that appeared in a few cities around the country this year. Seriously.   My answer to the question is a resounding "NO!".  In fact, the inane Bushisms that he subjected the American public to for eight long years have been replaying in my mind recently as Mitt Romney has been quite prolific with his own arsenal of assininity. A couple of months ago, I put together a montage of some of Mitt's stupider sayings, and realized this morning that it was time for an [...]

Biting the Hand that (Potentially) Feeds Me

I was tuning in the shine on the light night dial Doing anything my radio advised With every one of those late night stations Playing songs bringing tears to my eyes I was seriously thinking about hiding the receiver When the switch broke 'cause it's old They're saying things that I can hardly believe They really think we're getting out of control Radio is a sound salvation Radio is cleaning up the nation They say you better listen to the voice of reason But they don't give you any choice 'cause they think that it's treason So you had better [...]

Happy Birthday To Me

Yesterday, my 11-year old daughter enthusiastically asked me "Are you excited Mom?"  When I asked her "about what?" she replied "Your Birthday!!!!" After explaining that, at my age, birthdays are not something we really get excited about any more, I realized that it is still a day for recognizing milestones and taking inventory of our blessings and shortfalls both. Two years ago today, I was  thinking I got the greatest birthday gift ever, with the election of Barack Obama--the first African-American president in history, and someone who would advance a progressive agenda and get us back on the right track [...]
