Another Superfluous War

The following article was written by Israeli Peace Movement Gush Shalom founder Uri Avnery, and was originally published here. I wanted to post it here because I think it's the best thing I've read from an Israeli about the horrific practice of bombing one another into oblivion instead of fixing the problems that divide us.  Hopefully someone with power to do the right thing will read it and heed its call. HOW DID it start? Stupid question. Conflagrations along the Gaza Strip don’t start. They are just a continuous chain of events, each claimed to be in “retaliation” for the [...]

Time for Allen West to Retreat

I actually backed Allen West on his right to a recount.  This is, after all, FloriDUH, and we don't know how to count ballots here.  If the situation were reversed, I would have demanded a recount on behalf of his opponent. So, after two judges denied his request, the St. Lucie County canvassing board decided a recount of all the early voting ballots was called for.  And after the count, Patrick Murphy's lead increased by 200 votes. So, Mr. West, it's time for you to leave. Now... So much to talk about today.. we'll unwind the Petreaus scandal (is [...]

Eve of Destruction

All hell is breaking loose in the Middle East once again.  To trace the hostilities back to the beginning, we'd have to go back thousands of years.  There is no right (as in correct) side here.  As for this current round of fighting, I don't know where it started.  But Ha'aretz, the biggest and oldest newspaper in Israel, is reporting that Israeli peace activist Gershon Baskin, founder of the Israel/Palestine Center for Research and Information, was working on a permanent truce agreement between Israel and Hamas.  He was working directly with Hamas leader Ahmed Jabari, to whom he had delivered [...]

Helen and Elton and Oil, Oh My

***Quick update: The show is over and I'm still floored by the interview with Rabbi Nesenoff, the man who asked Helen Thomas the question that led to her resignation this morning. Now, in addition to feeling sorry for Helen, I feel sorry for this man who I think gives Rabbis a bad name, and shows why there's so much Antisemitism in this country today.  As a Jew, I hate what Helen said, but really despise the situation that's causing the fighting.  My interview with Rabbi Nesenoff comes at about 30 minutes into the podcast, which you can hear by clicking [...]

The Agony & The Ecstasy

On today's show, we learned that MDMA (commonly known as 'ecstasy') is the love drug.  My guest - Randy Hencken, director of Communications and Marketing for MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) said that when people take MDMA, they feel compassion and empathy. I asked him if there was any way to get some for the Republicans... but now that I've had a chance to think about it, perhaps we could get some to Bibi Netanyahu as well. Tonight's show began with a wonderful conversation with a fascinating man. Uri Avnery is an Israeli writer, and founder of the Gush [...]

No Rest for the Weary

We usually return from a long holiday weekend all rested and raring to go. Unfortunately, the news got in the way. Of course, the oil is still gushing from the underwater BP geyser.  Yes, in the middle of the Memorial Day weekend, BP told us that their Top Kill procedure didn't work. Then, the world awoke yesterday morning to find that the Israeli Defense Forces had rappelled onto the ships of the FreeGaza flotilla and opened fire on the activists on board who were attempting to bring relief supplies to the people of Gaza. So much for rest and relaxation. [...]
