3-20-20 Nicole Sandler Show – What To Do When You’re Sheltering with Jill Sobule and More

Download here or click below to play   We're headed into the weekend when many Americans will be sheltering at home, either by official order or by common sense. Today, I have some ideas to help you through the next few days, anyway. First, my plea to go adopt or foster a shelter animal. I'll speak with animal advocate Wendy Schugar-Martin about a program she's hoping to convince our local shelter to adopt. If you're interested in the program she put together to help get animals out of the shelter even if they're closed to the public, you can email [...]

8-27-15 Nicole Sandler Show- Dog Days

We've officially passed the period known as the Dog Days of Summer, but yesterday was National Dog Day, when American attempted to comfort ourselves by posting pictures of our precious pups. We did it to escape the painful news of the day, which included at least TWO shootings in which at least two people were killed, Life in America. Today, we'll deal with the aftermath, plus talk with Harvey J. Kaye and Howie Klein.

“Maybe as a society we value a dog’s life more than a human life.” #antivaxxers

Regular readers and RadioOrNot.com listeners know at least three things about me: 1. I love posting letters to the editor, because our voices matter. 2. I resent anti-vaxxers with the passion of eleventy billion white hot suns. 3. I do not tolerate idiocy well, if at all. For those of you who may have missed this post, please give it a read. I'll wait: My doctor’s kickass LA Times letter: “Ignorance cannot dictate public health.” Are you back already? Good, now check out this L.A. Times letter to the editor: My child is a student at Waldorf School of Orange County, and [...]

Lessons Learned

Today on the show, we discussed the lessons we've learned thanks to the government's reactions to two completely different protest strategies. As the brilliant cartoon posted above shows, the nutjobs with guns get all the media attention, while the peaceful protesters demanding that we do something to insure the planet will still be inhabitable by humans when our grandchildren come of age are ignored. But that's the smaller lesson learned here. We also now know, thanks to actual events, that peaceful, nonviolent practitioners of civil disobedience as a means of protest against a corrupt system that reward the criminals and [...]

My Life With Dogs – Saying Goodbye to Sasha

The post below originally appeared here on June 9, 2013, the day we said goodbye to Pooh.  I'm re-posting it today because this afternoon, we'll send Sasha - Pooh's sister - to the Rainbow Bridge where the other loyal, loving four-legged family members of my past are waiting...  The really sad thing is that Sasha isn't sick. But her body is riddled with arthritis in every joint, and bone spurs run the length of her spine. We've been doing our best to mitigate the pain. Now that she's on large doses of morphine and is still hurting, I know it's [...]

My Life With Dogs (a Farewell to Pooh Bear)

Pooh Bear was diagnosed with osteosarcoma  last month. The doctor said that all we could really do is keep her as comfortable, pain-free and happy for as long as possible, that we'd know when it's time. When I picked my daughter Alison up from school that day, I told her the Pooh was sick.  When we got home, Pooh was lying down by the front door in one of her favorite spots, and Alison got her blanket and laid down with her. Alison and Pooh Bear Alison was too young to remember when we had to put Sandy [...]

Not Dead Yet

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120522_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Not_Dead_Yet.mp3{/play} Podcast: Play in new window   As I read Chris Hedges latest, "A Victory for Us All" aloud on the show this morning, I was reminded -yet again- of the classic "I'm not dead yet" scene from Monty Python & The Holy Grail.  (For a brief moment, I even regretted ripping up a pocket copy of the US Constitution on my show this morning, after recounting the story about activist being arrested in Chicago and the distinct possibility that they may have been set up and charged as domestic terrorists.)  As Hedges so beautifully explains, [...]
