Back to Reality

I was on vacation last week - and that was the view from my room at the Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort. I was there for a music conference called Sunset Sessions - which I attend whenever I am able. My friend Michele Clark started Sunset Sessions almost 20 years ago as a way to introduce new music and new artists to radio programmers. She'd fly a select group of adventurous radio folk to an exotic location where we'd enjoy great company and incredible music. These days, Michele hosts her annual gatherings in San Diego and, true to form, puts on an [...]

On Death and Democracy

Four years ago today, we took a double hit on democracy. The Supreme Court issued its ruling on Citizens United vs FEC, and in one fell swoop, undid a century of campaign finance law and opened the floodgates for special interests to buy influence. Since then, a number of groups have mobilized, creating a movement toward a constitutional amendment to overturn this ruling that undermines democracy. United for the People is an umbrella group comprised of the many organizations fighting to fix this monetary mess. One of the groups, Move to Amend, produced a documentary, Legalize Democracy, that will air [...]

Ubuntu

I awoke this morning to President Obama speaking at the huge memorial for Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa. As he tends to do, Obama delivered a masterful oratory, filled with just the right words and emotions. But the one moment that's getting the most attention is the brief handshake he shared with Cuba's Raul Castro. The usual haters (read: Republicans) on Twitter are spewing the usual venom, like this: Whoa! An enthusiastic handshake AND another bow to Raul Castro. http://t.co/2oYw6XmONE @abcnews @CBSNews @NBCNews @nytimes @FoxNews #tcot — Right Wing Jewess (@RightWingJewess) December 10, 2013   Of course, Marco Rubio [...]

Unfettered Capitalism

That unfettered capitalism that the Pope recently decried was on full display this holiday weekend in all its ugliness. A San Diego man, dressed as Santa, decided to ridicule all the idiots lined up on Thanksgiving night to save a couple of bucks: Of course, it wasn't only the lowly minimum-wage workers who had to leave their family gatherings early to wait on the gluttons, but the police who were called in to work too.  At least one Black Friday death was reported, plus stabbings, tramplings and general fights over stuff.  It's worth a click here to see some of [...]

Playing Russian Roulette with the Economy

Or, I suppose, American Roulette. Either way, we're fucked. It's great to be back at Radio or Not after a week of having to watch out for F-bombs on terrestrial radio.  We spent much of the first hour recapping the madness that ensued while I was gone last week.  Cliff Schecter joined in to help try to make sense of the insanity. And if it's Monday, we find out what ridiculous things politicians said and how the so-called journalists who moderate the Sunday shows let them get away with spewing bullshit in our Fools on the Hill™ segment with Nicole [...]

A Broken Nation

Everything is broken... but not beyond repair. We could fix it if we'd only fix our broken Congress... A quick rundown of the broken things we talked about today: -The Environment  A "natural gas" drilling well in the Gulf of Mexico exploded Tuesday and is still spewing methane, just 50 miles from the Louisiana border, while there are two tar sands leaks poisoning Alberta, Canada.  And a train derailed at the Port of Tampa early this morning, spewing flammable ethanol. -The Fourth Amendment  The House yesterday voted down the Amash-Conyers amendment that would have effectively defunded the NSA's domestic spying [...]

21st Century Neanderthals

I'd expect the type of nonsense that spewed forth from these morons from a religious nut like Bryan Fischer (see below), but I guess I gave the cavemen at Fox Business Channel more credit than they deserve. Reacting to a new Pew Research study finding that in 40% of households with children under 18, the woman is either the primary or sole breadwinner of the family, these idiots heads' practically exploded! Lou Dobbs:  "we're watching society dissolve around us" Juan Williams:  "you're seeing the disintegration of marriage.... systemically..something going terribly wrong in American society and it's hurting our children and it's [...]

Worst Week Ever?

The week actually got off to a good start!  I spent the weekend at a wonderful music festival, and hit the ground running Monday morning with Alan Grayson on the show and feeling good. Then all hell broke loose in Boston. As bad as the actual explosion of two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon was, the lies and insanity that were presented as "news" made it even more disgusting. The worst perpetrator had to be the Rupert Murdoch-owned NY Post, Wall Street Journal and Fox "News" Channel: The "Saudi National" never officially called a "suspect" nor [...]

Boston You’re My Home

Today, we're all Bostonians, I guess. Although I never lived in Boston proper, I did live in Salem, NH while working at WXRV, a radio station based in Haverhill, MA.  But even more importantly, my dad was from Boston.  Born and raised in Chelsea, he graduated from Boston University and I can still hear his Boston accent when I think of him. Of course the line that gives this post its title comes from Boston's anthem, The Standells' "Dirty Water".  It was fitting to play this morning... I wish I had some news to pass along, as speculation does none [...]
