Pity the Billionaire — or Not!

Pity the Billionaire is the title of one of Thomas Frank's brilliant books, and one I immediately thought of when I read his current column, "Hillary Clinton forgets the '90s" Our latest gilded age and our latest phony populists" over at Salon.com. In it, the man who originally asked What's the Matter with Kansas?  today reminds us that Hillary, with her latest references to our living in a new gilded age, was living in the White House with her then-president husband when Frank and his colleagues at The Baffler used the same phrase to describe that era. In fact, as Frank recounts, there were a [...]

From Rio with Love and Balls

This is the lead banner for Sunday's protest that was gassed by Brazil’s military police. June 15, 2014. (Photo by Dave Zirin) I am not a soccer fan. That makes me in the distinct minority among the world's population, as most of the planet is is in the throes of fútbol mania as the "FIFA World Cup" is underway in Brazil. My favorite sports writer, Dave Zirin of The Nation, has been ready for this global event for a while now, as he'd been working on his new book, Brazil's Dance with the Devil: The World Cup, The Olympics, and [...]

Shit Happens

As I explained in my previous post, I had a little fender bender yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt- but what a stupid, boneheaded move on my part. I was rushing to get to Randi's studio, was impatient, and couldn't stop quickly enough when I realized the cars in front of me where stopped dead. As much as I needed the money I'd get for filling in for Randi, unfortunately it will all go to pay my deductible for the damage, and then some. In addition, my main computer's hard drive is going, so I'll need to replace it - [...]

You Say Cheney, I Say Warmonger

I love that Chris Matthews is the expert on the pronunciation of Darth Cheney's name.  I have my own take on it that you'll have to hear for yourself. No, I didn't have an "exclusive" interview with Dick Cheney as every TV news show claimed to. Instead, I spoke with Adam Christing, the ironically named producer/writer of the new film, A Mormon President: Joseph Smith and the Mormon Quest for the White House. I also checked in with Bill McKibben, who's still outside the White House protesting the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Unfortunately, the State Department just released its Final [...]

Hurricanes & Quakes: A Blessing or God’s Way of Getting Politicians’ Attention

So far, no locusts. On behalf of Californians everywhere (I lived in LA for 14 years), I apologize to the east coast for all of those 5.8 earthquake jokes. And on behalf of hurricane veterans, I apologize for pooh-poohing a category 1/tropical storm. Seriously. You're all natural disaster veterans now too... I'm truly sorry for those who live in Eric Cantor's district, which was home to the epicenter of the quake and certainly got hit by some of Irene's ire.  Your congressman doesn't want any disaster relief aid for you, unless he can take it from your Medicare or Social Security [...]
