7-10-15 Nicole Sandler Show – It’s Money That Matters

Nicole talks money in politics with a guy whose name is synonymous with it, Shaun McCutcheon (as in McCutcheon v FEC), plus more in the 2016 sweepstakes. For Flashback Friday, it's David Byrne from this week in 1994.

“Every time you vote Republican, you probably are voting against your self-interest.” #CitizensUnited

Michael Hiltzik is a top notch columnist, and some of his readers who commented on a recent Los Angeles Times post of his apparently agree. He wrote about something that is destroying what's left of our democracy: Campaign finance, specifically the Supreme Court Citizens United decision that legally transformed corporations into people: In the wake of Citizens United, the voice of the ordinary citizen has all but disappeared from Capitol Hill. It doesn't matter whether the donors are Democrats or Republicans; money becomes a political interest on its own. Nor is it a virtue of Citizens United that it took contribution limits [...]

Buying Votes and Paying Compliments?

Nicole Sandler speaks with Ken Vogel about the effects of Big Money in politics in the final week of election season 2014. Plus the Gliberal Goddesses reconvene to talk about catcalls on the street, unrealistic waistlines, Gamergate and lots more.

The Shit Has Hit the Fan

And here we are.. a nation of lawyers, guns and money. The lawyers argue before the courts, who decide that money rules all. And mentally ill people with guns go on shooting rampages. Today on the show, we continued discussing the ramifications of the Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon vs FEC - with David Cobb, national spokesperson at Move to Amend  and David Gans of the Constitutional Accountability Center.  Move to Amend has been building a movement to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United (and now, too, McCutcheon) which would explicitly state that corporations are not people and [...]

Death of Democracy by SCOTUS Coup

I began today's show proclaiming that "Something's Got to Give!" - noting that the media has been sold to the highest bidder and is now doing what George W. Bush always wanted, catapulting the propaganda, 24/7. At showtime this morning, I was lamenting the fact that the handful of "progressive talk" shows and stations still on the air are hanging on by a thin hair.... that neither the Democratic Party (DNC, DCCC, DSCC) nor any of the so-called progressive organizations (from DFA to PCCC to CAF to CAP and beyond) - NONE of them- spend a dime to advertise on [...]

It’s Money that Matters

Today on the show, we talked about money.  Well, the real topics were campaign finance reform and the Oscars... but it all boils down to dollars and cents. The Supreme Court is set to hear another case involving campaign contributions.  McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission is being called Citizens United 2.0, as the GOP wants to lift the limits on the aggregate amount of money an individual can contribute directly to candidates and to their party.  I spoke about it and the progress made to undo the Citizens United damage with a constitutional amendment with Move To Amend's David Cobb. Note [...]

A Progressive Call to Action!

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120808_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Get_Money_Out.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   If we keep repeating what happened last night in Washington and Michigan, we're going to wind up with a Congress full of assholes like Allen West and Mitt Romney in the White House.  Last night, the voters in Washington's 1st Congressional district really blew it.  Instead of nominating a true progressive in Darcy Burner, they wound up with a corpora-Dem in Suzan DelBene, who'll likely not make it as far as election day in November due to her shoddy (illegal?) financial disclosure filings.  According to Howie Klein over [...]

Dylan Ratigan and John Fugelsang!

I know that Dylan Ratigan can be a bit polarizing. But today was the second time I've interviewed him, and I find him refreshingly honest and one of the few people who's not afraid to speak the truth. He joined me this morning to talk about his new book, Greedy Bastards, the need for real campaign finance reform and getting money out of politics entirely, and his Get Money Out organization merging with United Republic to effect real change. In case you need a reminder of the fire in Ratigan, remember back to August of last year: As if that [...]
