6-29-15 Nicole Sandler Show – SCOTUS Wraps

The Supreme Court is adjourned until the First Monday in October. And that's a wrap! There were three remaining cases to be decided this morning and I'm happy with one of them -  the one dealing with Congressional Redistricting- that could conceivably lead to the end of gerrymandering! Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission Arizona's redistricting case stems from a ballot initiative from 2000 that established an independent redistricting commission to oversee complaints of legislative gerrymandering. What happened next was a partisan battle and a lawsuit by Republicans that argued the administration of federal elections should be decided [...]

Voting Rights…Or Not

Welcome to democracy's nightmare.  Today, it comes in the form of a lawsuit brought by Shelby County, Alabama challenging the Voting Rights Act working its way up to the Supreme Court.  More specifically, the part of the Voting Rights Act under attack today is Section 5 of the law that gives the Justice Department the right to review any changes in voting procedure proposed by a county or state that's covered under this provision before it's enacted. Greg Palast, author of Billionaires and Ballot Bandits, has been covering the subject of voter suppression efforts for years now, and has [...]

Veterans Day Double Header

Veterans Day was officially yesterday - November 11 , but we'll talk about it today on both my show and Randi Rhodes'! We honor those who served our nation while, at the same time, hope we never send more men & women to war.  So, Leah Bolger, president of Veterans for Peace will join me on both shows today. On my show, we'll talk about the latest casualty in the world of progressive talk radio.  On Friday evening, Clear Channel flipped Portland's KPOJ to sports.. deja vu all over again. Florida's 29 electoral votes were finally awarded to President Obama! [...]

Recall Revolt

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120606_Nicole_Sandler_Show.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   So, what the fuck happened in Wisconsin yesterday? Did big money win the day? Yes, but it's more complicated than that.  People revolted against yet another recall, or so it seems.  Recall exhaustion? That's what the exit polls are saying.  As Jamie Bouie writes (posted by Greg Sargent in WaPo), "On Wisconsin, Conventional Wisdom is Mostly Wrong".  According to exit polls, Walker won 17 percent of Obama supporters in the state, and overall, last night’s electorate favored the president over Mitt Romney by a significant margin, 52 [...]

Trayvon Martin and FloriDUH

A 17-year old black man named Trayvon Martin was the victim of a racist murderer who is standing behind the law, know as "Stand Your Ground."  The only thing more heinous is that the police in Sanford, Florida have let him do it. Not only is the murderer a racist, but Trayvon Martin is the victim of a hate crime.  The evidence is right there in George Zimmerman's 911 call.  Here's the whole thing: If you listen closely, right around the 2:22 mark, you'll hear Mr. Zimmerman, under his breath, mutter "Fucking coons". Listen here: The news broke this morning [...]

Keep On Trying

Some people might be discouraged by the results from the Wisconsin recall elections last night.  But today I'm taking the optimistic route. The Democrats picked up two senate seats; the people of Wisconsin recalled two Republican state senators, truly changing the balance of power, and fighting back against the big corporate dollars and the heinous Citizens United Supreme Court ruling. Of course, the returns came in with a bit of controversy.  What else would you expect from the county that brought us 14,000 extra votes "discovered" on the pc of the supervisor of elections days after the last Supreme [...]

The Post-Friday Budgetary Blues

As the new week begins, I'm still reeling from the events that transpired on Friday. As the country was waiting anxiously to see how the budget standoff would end Friday night, I was sitting in an attorney's office, signing away my rights to my house.  The house that my father bought after my mother died, where he lived his final dozen or so years in misery as a quadriplegic, is no longer my burdon. I bought my sister out of her share of the house after my father died ... at the height of the market.  The house that my [...]

Walk Like a Wisconsinite

Kudos to the good people of Wisconsin for taking to the streets and standing up to their dictatorial new governor who wants to strip collective bargaining rights from state workers.  John Nichols is the Washington correspondent for The Nation, though he lives in Wisconsin.  He wrote about what's happening there, and joined us for a few minutes this morning to tell us about it too. As democracy is spreading virally thought the middle east, I'm hoping that people in the US will take notice of what's happening in Wisconsin and follow their lead. To be continued... And although I'm not [...]

No Vote No Future

We are coming down to the wire.  I'll be voting tomorrow. As the following two videos show - one using clever production techniques and scare tactics and the other using that all-too-valuable but becoming ever-scarce and somehow vilified common sense - it's time to put up or shut up. First, we look to our friends at MoveOn.org, whose RepubliCorp campaign is nothing short of brilliant.  In fact, it was in keeping with this idea that Lauren Valle had her head stomped on by a Rand Paul campaign worker when she held up a sign proclaiming Paul "RepubliCorp Employee of the [...]
