6-29-15 Nicole Sandler Show – SCOTUS Wraps

The Supreme Court is adjourned until the First Monday in October. And that's a wrap! There were three remaining cases to be decided this morning and I'm happy with one of them -  the one dealing with Congressional Redistricting- that could conceivably lead to the end of gerrymandering! Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission Arizona's redistricting case stems from a ballot initiative from 2000 that established an independent redistricting commission to oversee complaints of legislative gerrymandering. What happened next was a partisan battle and a lawsuit by Republicans that argued the administration of federal elections should be decided [...]

History Keeps Repeating

We know that history tends to repeat itself. Today is the 51st anniversary of the March on Washington, which brought us Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have A Dream" speech. It's the 46th anniversary of the infamous police riot that broke out during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, when police brutalized thousands of anti-war protesters on nationwide television as the demonstrators chanted, “The whole world is watching.” 57 years ago today, North Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond began an (unsuccessful) attempt to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1957. He spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes, setting a record [...]

Shit Happens

As I explained in my previous post, I had a little fender bender yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt- but what a stupid, boneheaded move on my part. I was rushing to get to Randi's studio, was impatient, and couldn't stop quickly enough when I realized the cars in front of me where stopped dead. As much as I needed the money I'd get for filling in for Randi, unfortunately it will all go to pay my deductible for the damage, and then some. In addition, my main computer's hard drive is going, so I'll need to replace it - [...]

The Day Before the Day Before Thanksgiving

It's Tuesday, the day before the day before Thanksgiving, and today I'm very thankful that I won't be traveling very far.  The weather is lousy, flights are being cancelled left and right, the roads will be a mess. Yes, for once I'm thankful that I'll be here in FloriDUH. Actually, I will be on the road for about an hour in each direction tomorrow afternoon, heading up to West Palm Beach to Randi Rhodes' studio to guest host her show, but more about that tomorrow... This morning, I spent the first hour of the show talking about some news stories [...]

Hypocrites Exposed Here

I don't have enough time, enough space, or enough patience to list all of the hypocrites and their actions over the past few days - so let's start with a few. Texas parents want history book banned over  Second Amendment 'militia' definition. Parents in one Texas school district are demanding that one commonly-used history book be banned because they say that the mention of the word “militia” in a sentence about the “Second Amendment” is indoctrinating children to believe they don’t have a right to own firearms. Guyer High School junior Brie Getts told KTVT that she was doing her homework with [...]

We’re Going to Disneyland!

That's what you do after a big victory, right?  I still remember one year when I took my daughter to Disney World here in Florida.  She couldn't have been older than six.  On our way to park, we learned that day was "Gay Day" - an annual event.  My first thought was "cool, this could be a learning experience".  Except that my daughter was not at all fazed by the site of two men or two women holding hands. She had never been taught that there was anything wrong with that! This weekend, we're headed back to Disney World. [...]
