Almost Blue

Today, we begin a new weekly segment on the show: The Steve Israel Hour, sponsored by Little Debbie   , featuring Howie Klein of the Blue America PAC and Down With Tyranny. In case you didn't know about Blue America, it's a PAC run by Howie, Digby, and Crooks & Liars' John Amato, for the purpose of vetting and identifying the best progressive candidates out there, mostly in Congressional races, and help raise money for them. The sad fact is the today's Democratic Party - the DNC, led by Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and the DCCC, chaired by Steve Israel, tend [...]

Pagan Celebration!

Finally! Today marks the Vernal Equinox... or the beginning of Spring. Silly non-religious folks (like me) tend to celebrate these days- when we enter a new phase of planetary alignment with the sun- rather than religious holidays based on a book written a few thousand years ago. Yet somehow the pagans who join together to celebrate nature at Ostara Festivals around the world - and pre-date Christianity! - are considered the odd balls. Welcome to opposite world. It's somehow fitting that Fred Phelps, the founder of the hate-spewing Westboro Baptist Church, died on one of the biggest pagan holidays [...]

Music Can Soothe the Savage Beast

It can.. I know that music certainly helps me when I'm feeling off. After hearing about a murder trial that some misguided members of the media decided to call the "Loud Music Trial" (instead of the Jordan Davis murderer trial), I decided to turn the spotlight on how music is helping raise money for some truly progressive candidates. The Blue America PAC just wrapped up a truly special fundraiser for Congressman Alan Grayson.  Grayon's favorite artist is Joni Mitchell (click through for my print interview with her from a few years back), so all who donated to his campaign through [...]

Point- Counterpoint

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120718_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Point_Counterpoint.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   Today, we heard two sides from the left. From the Democratic party, chair of the DNC - Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined in to talk about President Obama's visit to Florida (tomorrow and Friday - info & ticket sign-up can be found here!). Debbie and I have been been speaking on the radio for a number of years now, and I've always challenged her with the tough questions. Today was no different.  I asked about a few things on my mind, including why the Democratic party uses contributor [...]

Change

Today's pre-show music was all about change, and I usually close the show with a clip of Clapton's "Change the World."  In 2008, Barack Obama ran on a theme of Hope & Change.  We can still hope, but are left waiting for the change. Instead of waiting, we can make change...  In the first hour of today's show, we explore a couple of ways. One is to get involved.  Democracy for America grew out of Dean for America and has become a great progressive force for change.  Arshad Hasan, DFA's executive director, is in Miami where he led a training [...]

Welcome To A Brand New Year

This morning we began yet another new year of shows in which we examine what's happening and try to figure it all out. Today, I was joined by Howie Klein of Down With Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.  We talked about his trip to the Yucutan and his visits with the Mayan people who told him that it's only the calendar that ends in December, not the world! We also discussed the DCCC, the NDAA  (and my questions to Debbie Wasserman Schultz about it on the Randi Rhodes Show on Friday), and the upcoming elections and the need to [...]

Yes Virginia, There Is An Opponent!

Virginia Foxx is one of the more heinous Republicans in the House of Representatives.  I don't know if there's something in the water in the Carolinas, but that part of the country has more crazy than a cuckoo's nest. That's the latest ad from the Blue America PAC, the group run by DownWithTyranny's Howie Klein, Digby (Hullabaloo) and Crooks & Liars' John Amato, who find the best progressive candidates and help them raise the necessary funds to beat the worst Republicans and Blue Dogs. Both Howie and Digby have blogs up today about the Congressional race from North Carolina's 5th [...]

Wet Wednesday – The Nicole Sandler Show

Florida is under a Tropical Storm warning. I expected to awaken to Tropical Storm Nicole this morning, but it's still just Tropical Depression #16.  Why am I not surprised that Nicole is playing hard to get? Anyway, Florida Power & Light permitting, I've got a great show for you today. With election day now less than five weeks away, we'll focus in on different aspects of this election season. Last night, California witnessed the first debate between their gubernatorial candidates.  The once (and future?) Governor Jerry Brown, who was more impressive than I expected, and the Witless eMeg Whitman, who [...]

Voting: An Intelligent Person’s Responsibility

Today is Tuesday-- primary day in Michigan.  If you live in Michigan's 8th District, I hope you wrote in the name of Lance Enderle for Congress.  We'll know by this time tomorrow whether or not the people of Michigan's 8th will actually have a Democrat on the ballot. But I guess it doesn't matter to Ed Schultz if there are any Democrats on the ballot where he's registered to vote (is it North Dakota, Minnesota or NY these days?), as he proclaimed on Friday that he won't be voting in the midterm election.  Actually, I hadn't heard this until a [...]

Baseball, Politics, and Humor!

It's a busy show tonight, and I want to make sure you have links to all the guests and most of the topics! We'll kick things off at 11pm ET/8pm PT with John Amato of Crook & Liars. I've been a fan of that site for a long time, and this is John's first appearance on my show, so I'm quite excited about it. But I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, as the story he wants to talk about tonight deals with baseball player Mark McGwire, his steroid use, and the fact that former George W. Bush spokesliar Ari [...]
