Rewriting History

The President spoke last night from his newly refurnished Oval Office, declaring that combat operations have ended in Iraq.  Didn't we hear that somewhere before? OK, he didn't say "Mission Accomplished"  but he did say that combat operation in Iraq had ended. He also praised the guy that got us into that bloody mess in the first place. Seriously?! Tonight on the show, we'll listen to some of President Obama's speech, and dissect it with Jason Leopold, deputy managing editor at Truthout and editor-at-large at The Public Record.  We'll do that in hour two of the show. We'll kick things [...]

Ding Dong Prop H8 is Dead

... for now anyway, as an appeal has already been filed, and a stay is already in place.  But it's great news coming out of California as Judge Vaughn Walker (a George H W Bush appointee, no less) ruled that the statute violated a fundamental right of people in love to get married-- he found Prop 8 "unconstitutional under both the due process and equal protection clauses.". Read the ruling for yourself here: Prop 8 Ruling FINAL It's nice to be able to share good news for a change! We'll get into the ruling tonight with FireDogLake's Teddy Partridge and [...]

Wednesday Busy Wednesday

What a show we have for you tonight.  Unfortunately, I have no time for the rest of the interviews I taped at Netroots Nation... all the more reason to tune in tomorrow night! Of course, the big story today comes from Arizona, where US District Court Judge Susan Bolton blocked the most controversial sections of SB 1070, which was slated to take effect tomorrow.  The law will still go into effect tomorrow, but without the most heinous provisions-- including the sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws, and the parts that required immigrants [...]

Nukes and War and Votes and Grayson too…

***Update*** During the show, the House voted on the war supplemental bill, so I called David Swanson (warisacrime.org, davidswanson.org) to join in for a few minutes too... It's a busy show tonight.  We've got a lot to fit in to our two hours... Somewhere along the way. I'll share my interview with Congressman Alan Grayson from Netroots Nation! We'll also speak with PDA board member Norman Solomon about their conference this weekend (which was at the same time as the afore-mentioned Netroots Nation); With Shaunna Thomas, the director of the newly-formed P Street Project, from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee; [...]

What Happened in Vegas will be Heard on the Radio!

Yes, on tonight's show, I'll share some of the highlights of Netroots Nation, which wrapped up yesterday in Las Vegas.  I made it through with little injury, despite my best efforts. I thoroughly embarrassed myself in front of Amy Goodman, Brad Friedman, Jason Leopold, Shannyn Moore, Jeanne Devon, and a whole host of others... but some of them embarrassed themselves too! I was fortunate enough to do the show from the exhibit hall on Thursday (just scroll down to listen to the show with Amy Goodman, Brad Friedman, Shannyn Moore, Jeanne Devon, Markos Moulitsas, the executive directors of [...]

Monday, Round Two!

After three hours of hosting Randi's show, it was time to return to my show. Cindy Sheehan returned to give us an update on what happened when she went to court last week, and I was joined in the second hour by GottaLaff (Laffy) from The Political Carnival. At the top of the show, I checked in with Kenny Pick, who held down the fort while I was out all last week (and will fill in for me again tomorrow when I'm flying to Vegas).   Kenny and his posse will also be hosting a Friday night show here at Radio [...]

It’s Friday Ya Bastids!

No, I won't be bouncing my boobies today. Not that there's anything wrong with that... but that is Randi's thing. So, I'll defer to her on that one.  But I also thank Randi profusely for allowing me to speak into her microphone this week, and trusting me with her wonderful listeners. To close out the week, we once again have a stellar line-up of guests... We'll start off with the peace mom herself, Cindy Sheehan.  Cindy's in DC these days, leading Peace of the Action- -still working toward a peaceful world. John Nichols, Washington correspondent for The Nation, will be [...]

Independence Day… or not!

I just finished reading a piece penned by the late, great Howard Zinn entitled "Put Away the Flags," which pretty much sums up how I'm feeling on this 4th of July. "Is not nationalism -- that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder -- one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred? ... Our citizenry has been brought up to see our nation as different from others, an exception in the world, uniquely moral, expanding into other lands in order to bring civilization, liberty, democracy." Ahh, [...]

McChrystal Out. Now if we could only get out of Afghanistan…

He did it. The President actually showed some backbone and kicked McChrystal to the curb. Unfortunately, he put General David Petraeus back in to run the Afghanistan war theater; the same general who just last week said that the July 2011 date for beginning withdrawal of our troops was "nuanced." Grrr. We'll talk a bit about that on tonight's show.  And we've got a full slate of great guests joining in too. Christy Harvey of the Center for American Progress returns from a few weeks off. She'll bring some of the stories we might otherwise have missed. Although BP was [...]

Memorial Day Weekend – Watch this Video

Down here in Miami, Veterans for Peace South Florida have once again erected Arlington South Beach to pay tribute to our fallen men and women from Iraq and Afghanistan. If you're not in South Florida, perhaps the Veterans for Peace chapter closest to you is doing something similar. If you are in Miami, try to make it by.  It's an incredibly moving experience. Members and supporters of Veterans for Peace South Florida Chapter 32 will conduct a Memorial service before sunset, 5pm,  on Monday, May 31st, Memorial Day. During candlelight vigils, participants in will read from the list of Florida’s [...]
