Stop Making Sense or Life During Wartime

Once again, I feel as if I've entered Opposite World, where up is down, in is out and everything is completely backwards. I didn't meant to quote the Talking Heads, but it's the lower case talking heads who are making my brain hurt right now. First of all, the talking head making the most sense about Iraq right now is... Shephard Smith!?!?! Yes, the man who is relegated to keeping his sexuality safely hidden in the closet because his employer is Faux News is, once again, speaking the truth. This time, he's saying what I'm thinking about Iraq. If [...]

War, Peace and Politics

"When will they ever learn?"  -- Pete Seeger The answer, sadly, is never. Mankind has waged war since the beginning of time. If it were up to me, world leaders who wanted to send their nations' youth to battle should, instead, meet one another in an arena and fight to the death. Maybe that would end the killing. Back in World War I & II, soldiers returning from the battlefield were described as being "shell shocked". Today it's Post Traumatic Stress. Regardless what you call it, people who experience the madness of war, of watching their fellow soldiers blown to bits [...]

Stop All Wars

We're waging war in Afghanistan and Iraq (yes, we're still fighting there). The GOP is waging war on women. We have a so-called war on drugs and terrorism. I just saw a news article that says Israel is waging war on solar power (to keep the Palestinians from having electricity. And on and on goes the list. ENOUGH ALREADY! War sucks. Of any kind. It's time for them all to end and focus on making peace. What a concept! This morning on the show, I spoke with Yochi Dreazen, Senior National Security Correspondent for National Journal. He's been writing aboutthe [...]

Who’ll Be The Last To Die For A Mistake?

I don't know the answer, but the mistake in Afghanistan will last for, at least, three more years.  In case you didn't hear the president's speech last night, you can watch it here: This morning on my show, I spoke with Derrick Crowe of Rethink Afghanistan and Richard Allen Smith, Vice Chairman of VoteVets to get their opinions. Although their reasons differed slightly, they both agreed with me that the plan doesn't get our troops home nearly quickly enough. If you haven't yet watched Rethink Afghanistan, please follow the link and watch the documentary.  I think that, after you do, [...]

The News Has Been Canceled

You cannot get a real news report via broadcast or cable news any more.  With the exception of a few shows, it's corporate controlled drek through which one must wade to try to pull some facts.  But the truth is, there's so much news to discuss.  I just wish some of it was good. The word from Japan seems to get scarier by the minute.  As most of the coverage on the TV is about the disaster there, I figured today would be a good day to focus on some of the stories not getting any attention here at home. [...]

It’s a Mad World

The Wisconsin State Senate breaks laws to break the unions and the US House of Representatives goes on an Islamic witch hunt. It's a mad world. A few tweets that underscore my point: "The Republican Party has come for my job, my union, my wife's uterus, my art and my radio station." FL is in trouble. We'll be a Mariana Island dotted with sweatshops & tent revivals b4 Rick Scott & Company are done. Per union leader Ed Sadlowski "Cops just dragged out a 15 year old girl from Assembly Chamber. She is totally distraught." Gov. Walker reminds you that [...]

The Reality of War

Yesterday, David Swanson told us that War is a Lie. Today, we see the sad truth that comes out of those lies. Restrepo, the Grand Jury Prize winner for Documentary at this year's Sundance Film Festival, is a feature-length film by photojournalist Tim Hetheringon and journalist/author Sebastian Junger that chronicles the deployment of US troops stationed at one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan.  It'll premiere Monday night (11/29) at 9pm ET on the National Geographic channel. Tim Hetherington will be my guest this morning to talk about this new, unvarnished look at the realities of war. In hour [...]

Talking ‘Bout A Revolution

We will be doing just that on today's show.  Political cartoonist, columnist and war correspondent Ted Rall is my first guest this morning.  His new book, The Anti-American Manifesto explicitly calls for a violent revolution. Seriously! Rall also recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan.  We'll delve into that mess, as well as the mess here at home that prompted his writing of the Manifesto.  It should be a fascinating conversation. My friend David Swanson reviewed Rall's book recently and, I must admit, I agree more with Swanson than Rall on this one, but it's definitely worth the discussion! In [...]

Thanks to Earl, I filled in for Randi today

**Update** The podcast is posted. Sorry for the sound quality. It does get better toward the middle to end of the show... With Hurricane Earl threatening the eastern seaboard, Randi headed out of town.  As always, I was thrilled to fill in. I had a blast talking to Randi's listeners.  You guys are great... We covered a lot of territory.  Here's the info and the links as promised: Dr. Jeff Masters, director of Meteorology for Weather Underground was my first guest, giving us an update on Earl's trajectory. Journalist Dahr Jamail has been covering the BP disaster for a while [...]
