9-18-19 Nicole Sandler Show – Climate Week is Here and Bibi May Be Out

Israel went to the polls yesterday, and the race is too close to call. But it looks like Bibi will be out as Prime Minister of Israel after 5 terms. Nicole called a hotel in Tel Aviv to connect with an Israeli citizen to get their thoughts on the news. Click on the link for the Trip Adviser page for The Vera hotel. If I ever get there and can afford $265 a night, that's where I'll stay! Then we turn our attention to Climate Week and this Friday's Global Climate Strike, which kicks it all off. 350.org's North [...]

Benghazi Tourette’s

If you happened upon a "news" program on TV this weekend, you likely noticed the latest affliction affecting Beltway Republicans.  They've all come down with an odd strain of Tourette's Syndrome in which the verbal tic is "Benghazi".  The neuropsychiatric disorder  appears to have infected only the GOP brains that were already a bit off to begin with, but it's spread with such ferocity that containment at this point seems unlikely... that is, until the next overblown nontroversy arises. We'll get to Nicole Belle's take on what went down on our TV sets yesterday in just a moment... But first... [...]

Working for a Living… or Not

Just how much constitutes a living wage? Minimum wage certainly doesn't cut it.  Since 2009, the federal minimum wage has stood at $7.25 an hour - though some states pay less and a few paid more.   But if you were paid the federal minimum and were lucky enough to get 40 hours of work a week, you'd gross a whopping $290 for that week's work... and if you never took a day off, you'd gross an annual income of $15,080. For a family of two, that qualifies you as earning less than the federal poverty limit. In a nutshell, corporations [...]

After the Storm

If there is a silver lining on the giant Sandy cloud - and I'm not sure there is one - it's that now, perhaps, the powers that be will begin to take the reality of climate change seriously. Words fail me right now.  This morning, my friend Greg Basta joined me on the show to talk about the storm.  Greg was on with me last week to talk about the release of the Occupy the Boardroom book that's just been published.  Of course, I also asked him about his work with New York Communities for Change where he works as [...]

Today’s Show – Monday Nov 7

Today, I was joined by Jamie Henn - Communications and Development Director of 350.org and TarsandsAction.org about yesterday's massive march and rally at the White House. Alan Rosenblatt was my guest to talk about the "Faux 15" - the 15 so-called "jobs bills" that have passed the Boehner House and are now "stuck in the Senate"... Here's the list on Canter's site, and here's how Nancy Pelosi's site explains them. This is how @drdigipol tweeted them out (posted newest to oldest: drdigipol Alan Rosenblatt There r the faux 15 #jobs bills passed by House. They kill jobs, kill people, & put air, [...]

Oh Mercy Mercy Me

Marvin Gaye was on to something. He wrote Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) way back in 1971. And here we are today, fighting to save the planet.  The White House announced yesterday that they'll be installing a solar water heater and replacing the solar panels on the roof that Jimmy Carter installed in 1979, but Ronald Reagan took down. Bill McKibben and his gang at 350.org have another huge worldwide event planned this Sunday - 10-10-10. And our friend Howie Klein of DownWithTyranny and the Blue America PAC also had solar panels installed in his home last week... Today, we'll [...]

Dueling Hearings and Day 71 of the Worst Environmental Disaster in History

Welcome to Tuesday, Day 71 of the BP disaster in the Gulf.  As if that's not enough, there's lots of other news to talk about today. It's also Day 2 of the Elena Kagan Supreme Court confirmation hearings. And General Petraeus was at his own hearing, getting confirmed by the Senate Armed Service Committee as the next commander of U.S. and foreign forces in Afghanistan. We played a bit of  "Dueling Hearings" on tonight's show in between interviews. It was an interesting collection of guests tonight. Billy Hayes, the guy on whose story the 1978 film "Midnight Express" was based [...]
