yoko twisted gun

The truth is that John Lennon was shot down and killed 34 years ago today with a gun he bought for $169 in Hawaii after showing his driver’s license, and was able to bring to NY unchecked.

The truth is that this Friday will mark two years since 20 first-graders at Newtown, CT’s Sandy Hook Elementary School and six adults were murdered by another mentally ill young man who should never have had access to any guns, let alone the arsenal that his mother – who he also killed that day – made available to him.

And in the 34 years since we lost the voice of a generation, and the two years since we lost the potential in those 20 little lives, this nation has apparently just accepted the idea that we could be shot dead in our tracks every time we leave the house as a way of American life.

John Lennon sang Gimme Some Truth – the truth is both sad and increasingly maddening.

Cliff Schecter joined me in the last segment of today’s show to talk about that and other recent news. He told us something that I hadn’t been aware of… the lame duck Senate might still take a vote to confirm Vivek Murthy, President Obama’s nominee for Surgeon General.  No vote had been called yet because the chicken shit Democrats in the Senate have been afraid to challenge the NRA, who oppose Murthy because he co-founded a group called Doctors for America that has also advocated for gun control.

Seriously. It’s time for the madness to end.

In the first hour, as he does every Monday morning, I was joined by Howie Klein of Down With Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.  Today we touched on the dysfunction that is the Democratic Party, and two of Howie’s posts on the problems:  “The Republican Wing Of The Democratic Party Claims It Still Doesn’t Have A Silver Stake Through It’s Heart” and “How Will Wasserman Schultz’s Post Mortem Committee Explain Mary Landrieu, Al Muratsuchi And Ileana Ros-Lehtinen?”.

2016 can’t come quickly enough!

Tomorrow, as the CIA Torture Report may finally be released, I’ll be joined by Marcy Wheeler and Digby! See you back here, radio or not!
