8-6-14 Nicole Sandler Show – I’m in a New York State of Mind

I was born in New York City, and lived in Queens until my family moved to Florida on the day I finished 6th grade. After graduating from the University of South Florida, I moved back to New York, working in radio there for five years (until a relationship brought me to Los Angeles- a story for another day). I love New York, and will always consider it, in some sense, home. I also adored Governor Mario Cuomo. The picture above was taken in 1984 or 1985, when I produced a monthly statewide "Ask the Governor" radio show. (Another aside: [...]

#RANpaul, #WarOnWhites & More GOP Insanity

I don't know which on is more offensive - Congressman Steve King's comments to the DREAMers who dared question him about his desire to deport them, or Senator Rand (Ran) Paul's dine and dash upon hearing them identify themselves as DREAMers! I began the show with the whole video, embedded below for your convenience, and remind you why DREAM Action Coalition co-director Erika Andiola and fellow DREAMer Cesar Vargas wanted to talk with him in the first place. You'll remember that, in a Newsmax interview in July of 2013, Steve King likened DREAMers to drug smugglers with calves the size of [...]

Torture and Lies

President Obama admitted the US tortured "some folks" following the 9-11 attacks. Obama has used the word "torture" before to describe the harsh interrogation tactics used at CIA-run secret prisons during the Bush administration. But his words at a White House news conference were notably more direct than previous statements. The comments reflect the line the president is preparing to walk as he gets ready for the release of a Senate committee report on the Bush-era rendition, detention and interrogation program. According to the president, torture is not OK - but lying about torture is acceptable, as long as you [...]

News, Views and Muse

I was a bit worried that there might not be enough news to talk about with Congress going on a 5 1/2 week recess but, then again, it's not like they do anything when they're in session. But the drama that unfolded yesterday as they all attempted to leave DC was the perfect snapshot to illustrate the comedy of errors that the 113th Congress is. Adding to the absurdity of it all was Boehner's contention that President Obama, against whom the Speaker is filing a lawsuit over his use of executive orders, should use his executive powers to do something [...]

Big Morning Boehner

We haven't whipped out a Morning Boehner in a while, but there was a big one waiting for us today. Speaker Boehner yesterday led his crazy caucus on a Quixotic mission to sue the president to “to seek appropriate relief” for Obama’s failure to enforce a provision of the Affordable Care Act that would penalize businesses that do not offer basic health insurance to their employees. Neither Boehner, nor anyone else in House leadership would say that this lawsuit is not a step towards impeachment. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi went there during her time on the floor before the vote.  When I [...]

Going to Pot

On November 4, Florida may become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana. I certainly never think of FloriDUH as a trend leader and, in this case, we'd be in the middle of the pack. But that's certainly better than dead last or bringing up the rear as is usually the case. On the ballot on election day, Floridians will get to vote yes or no on constitutional amendment 2: Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions. Although many groups and factions got together to make this dream a reality, United for Care led the charge in the petition drive, [...]

Gliberal Goddesses

Today, we inaugurated a new segment on the show - The Gliberal Goddesses! It's GottaLaff, Amy Simon and myself talking about things that women talk about, the way women talk about them. Today we discussed the Ray Rice domestic violence case and the NFL's sad response to it. So great to hear from Keith Olbermann again! While I agree with him, I also agree with Whoopi Goldberg We also discussed some Pat Robertson insanity (nothing new there), and the most outrageous comment of the day, this time from Geraldo Rivera... I don't think we'll have trouble filling this segment in [...]

Taking on the World

Sometimes it feels as if we're taking on the whole world. That's because caring, responsible people just can't sit idly by while the world is crumbling around us. It's why we fight back against the immoral assholes who scream "Get out" to refugee children whose parents risked their lives on the remote hope they'll find better futures here. It's why we recoil in horror when the images of bombed schools and hospitals with blood and bodies strewn senselessly about cross our TV and computer screens. And why we fight back against the big moneyed interests whose only agenda seems to [...]

Flashback Friday

What a week this has been! I can't say I'm sorry to see it end. This morning on the show, we flashed back to last week and to February 2000. Last week was easy. I flew to Detroit for Netroots Nations following a few days in Los Angeles for the American Federation of Teachers convention. Although I did live shows from Netroots on Thursday and Friday, I recorded a bunch of interviews on Saturday, some of which we heard earlier in the week. Today, we began with Mike Rogers of Raw Story and Netroots Connect, and a conversation about almost [...]

It’s a Matter of Life and Death

War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! --Edwin Starr I was hit with a dose of sad reality yesterday during the show when, as I was discussing the sickening situation in Gaza, a long-time regular listener of this show, contributor and participant in the chat room posted in there, "Israeli Jews are Nazis." When I implored him to rethink his over generalization and admit that his hyperbole was overblown, he left the chat room in a huff and quickly stopped his monthly $5 contribution of support for Radio or Not. I emailed him the following: I'm sorry that you [...]
